Gold Glove Winner Darwn Barney Joins Iowa on Rehab
April 13, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
Iowa Cubs News Release
Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Cubs welcome Gold Glove Award Winner Darwin Barney back to Des Moines on a major league rehab assignment this weekend. The Chicago Cubs also recalled RH Rafael Dolis to the big leagues today after placing closer Kyuji Fujikawa on the disabled list.
Barney opened the season on Chicago's disabled list after suffering a deep gash in his left knee that required stitches. Barney sustained the injury while chasing a pop fly in foul territory during an exhibition game at Minute Maid Park in Houston in the weekend just prior to Opening Day. Last year, Barney hit .254 with seven home runs and 44 RBI in 156 games with Chicago and tied a Major League record with 141-consecutive errorless games at second base. Barney was a PCL All-Star with Iowa in 2010 before getting his first major league call-up on August 12. Barney played four games on a rehab assignment with Iowa in 2011 and hit .357 (5-for-14) with a double, a homer, and three RBI.
Dolis had no record and a 3.86 ERA (1ER/2.1IP) in his three appearances with Iowa to begin the season. Dolis was 2-4 with a 6.39 ERA (27ER/38.0IP) and four saves in 34 games with Chicago last year and 0-1 with a 2.51 ERA (4ER/14.1IP) and three saves in 13 games with Iowa.
Just prior to last night's game, the Cubs also placed RH Casey Coleman on the disabled list (as of April 10) with right shoulder inflammation. Coleman has allowed two runs on three hits in three innings in two appearances with Iowa this year. RH Esmailin Caridad was activated from the disabled list and suffered the loss in his first appearance last night. Caridad started the year on the DL with a calf strain.
The Cubs host the Albuquerque again tonight at 7:05 at Principal Park. The gates will open at 5:35. Fans will receive magnet schedules sponsored by Pittsburgh Paints. The game will be broadcast live on AM 940 and streamed live at iowacubs.com with the On-Deck Circle Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45.
