Albuquerque Isotopes News Release
DES MOINES, Iowa - Logan Watkins hit a two-run home run, which was originally a double until the umpires huddled and changed the call, to lead the Iowa Cubs to a 6-1 victory over the Albuquerque Isotopes on Saturday night at Principal Park.
It was the 'Topes first loss to the Cubs in six meetings this year, and just their second loss in the last 18 games to Iowa.
Alfredo Amezaga drove home the only run for the 'Topes in the second inning, scoring Brian Barden from first base on a double to the right-center gap.
The Isotopes offense was held in check by I-Cubs starter Barrett Loux, who allowed one run in five innings, while striking out five. Then reliever Yoanner Negin struck out eight batters in three dominant innings of relief.
Javy Guerra, in his second start for Albuquerque, didn't have his best command. He walked three in 2 2/3 innings and was lifted when his pitch count reached 60 in the third inning. Guerra allowed two runs, but did strike out five.
'Topes reliever Angel Castro allowed three runs in 4 1/3 innings of relief. Watkins' two-run homer was followed by an infield single by Darwin Barney (on a rehab assignment for the Chicago Cubs) and an RBI triple by Brett Jackson in the fourth inning.
Steve Ames, activated from the disabled list earlier in the day, allowed a run-scoring double to Brian Bogusevic in the eighth inning to cap the scoring.
First baseman Scott Van Slyke extended his hitting streak to a league-leading 10 games with a broken-bat single in the eighth. He also walked and has reached base safely in 27 of 42 plate appearances this year. Nick Buss went 2-for-4, including a double that was his eighth extra-base hit in 25 at-bats.
Game three of the four-game series is Sunday afternoon. First pitch is at 12:05 Mountain Time. Sean White will be on the hill for the Isotopes. Chris Rusin, the I-Cubs' opening night starter, makes his third start.
