Zephyrs Rally Past Express, 3-2
April 13, 2013 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1)
New Orleans Baby Cakes News Release
Jordan Brown had two hits and drove in two runs, and Elih Villanueva pitched six strong innings as the New Orleans Zephyrs rallied for a 3-2 win over the Round Rock Express on Saturday night at Zephyr Field.
Brown singled with one out in the seventh to cash in a leadoff double by Nick Green, tying the game at 2-2. A wild pitch by Express starter Collin Balester allowed Brown to advance to third base, and after an intentional walk and a pitching change, Brown scored the go-ahead run on a grounder by Wilson Valdez that was mishandled by Round Rock shortstop Greg Miclat .
Dan Jennings and Chris Hatcher retired the final six Express batters of the game, with Hatcher nailing down his PCL-leading fourth save and second in as many nights.
The two-run rally in the seventh allowed the Zephyrs to come back after Round Rock had grabbed a brief lead in the top of the inning. Jim Adducci and Yangervis Solarte greeted reliever Zach Phillips with back-to-back singles, and Robinson Chirinos put the Express ahead with a one-out single to left.
Phillips (1-0), who was credited with the win, escaped further damage by wiggling out of a bases-loaded jam, getting Chris McGuiness to pop out and striking out Miclat .
Villanueva turned in his first quality start since last August 15, blanking the Express on just two hits through the first five innings.
Round Rock tied the score in the sixth after consecutive one-out singles by Miclat and Engel Beltre . With Aaron Cunningham at the plate, Beltre got caught in a rundown between first and second, allowing Miclat to race home with the tying run.
New Orleans had led 1-0 since the second inning, when Matt Diaz singled to left off Balester, stole second and scored on a double by Brown.
Balester (1-1) was charged with three runs in 6 1/3 innings and took the loss. He allowed six hits, struck out four and walked two.
The Zephyrs and Express meet in the third game of the series on Sunday at 2 p.m. Right-hander Tom Koehler gets the starting assignment for New Orleans, opposing Round Rock righty Josh Lindblom.
