Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
Fort Wayne, IN - The TinCaps were top-heavy Saturday night, and in the best of ways as they defeated the Bowling Green Hot Rods, 8-4, in front of a sellout crowd at Parkview Field. The top four hitters in the lineup combined to go 9-for-16, drive in six runs, and score eight more, helping Fort Wayne even the three-game series, 1-1.
Down 4-2 after two innings, the Fort Wayne (30-38) offense quashed Bowling Green (31-37) starter Ryan Stanek (3-3) with a four-run output. Dustin Peterson, who had already driven home one run in the first, plated Ronnie Richardson and Mallex Smith to tie the game. Fernando Perez and River Stevens also drove home runs in the inning, which gave the TinCaps a 6-4 lead.
In the fourth against reliever Aaron Griffin, Perez hit a one-hop double off the wall in right-center field to score Richardson and Peterson and put Fort Wayne ahead, 8-4. With the nights of Peterson (3-for-4, 3 R, 3 RBI) and Perez (2-for-4, 3 RBI), the three and four-hole hitters for the TinCaps had done enough to beat the Hot Rods. Their efforts, combined with those of Ronnie Richardson (1-for-4, 2 R) and Mallex Smith (3-for-4, 2 R, SB) provided nearly all of the offense.
Payton Baskette (2-3), in his final start of the first half, allowed six hits and four runs in the first two innings, but settled in over the following 3 1/3 innings. In earning his first win since May 12, he fanned three and walked three. The duo of Eric Yardley and Tyron Guerrero were near flawless, as Yardley worked 2 2/3 hitless innings, and Guerrero fired a scoreless ninth.
Fort Wayne's final game of the first half comes Sunday afternoon at 1:05 p.m. The Father's Day matinee will see Walker Weickel take the mound for the TinCaps and Jaime Schultz toss for the Hot Rods. The game can be seen on XFINITY 81 and heard on ESPN Radio 1380 and TheFanIndiana.com.
