Clinton LumberKings News Release
Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs (35-32) sent 12 batters to the plate in a seven-run second inning and cruised to a 9-5 win over the Clinton LumberKings (30-36) Friday night at Dozer Park. The L'Kings' loss was their ninth in ten games, and they now sit a season-high six games under .500.
Starter Eddie Campbell (4-5) couldn't get through two full innings in his final first-half outing. The southpaw worked around one hit and one walk in the first, but he couldn't stop the bleeding in the second. The 22-year-old retired the first batter in the second before allow four consecutive hits, the latter two being an RBI double by Kenny Peoples-Walls and a two-run double by Michael Schulze. Campbell got a lineout for the second out before allowing another RBI single, walk, and a two-run triple to Carson Kelly. Another run-scoring hit knocked the Virginia Tech graduate out of the game.
Down in a seven-run hole, Clinton plated single runs in the fourth and seventh innings. Jack Reinheimer hit his first of two doubles to lead off the fourth, and after moving to third on a wild pitch, scored a two-out RBI single by Corey Simpson. In the seventh, Jeff Zimmerman singled off the wall in right and scampered to third on a Lonnie Kauppila double into the same corner. Aaron Barbosa then grounded out to first, scoring Zimmerman.
With the L'Kings' seven-run deficit cut to five, Peoria put together three hits and a sacrifice fly to extend their lead back to seven, 9-2. All three runs were charged to Clinton reliever Tommy Burns.
The LumberKings made the score respectable, scoring three runs all with two outs in the ninth. Christian Carmichael drew a four-pitch walk, took second on fielder's indifference, and scored on Reinheimer's second double. Austin Wilson then launched his 10th home run of the season to deep left, providing the final score, 9-5.
Campbell saw his ERA jump from 5.43 to 6.36 after allowing seven earned runs over 1.2 innings. Aaron Brooks delivered 3.1 scoreless innings and Emilio Pagan threw a shutout frame in the eighth.
Four LumberKings recorded multiple hits, including Reinheimer (2x5, 2 2B, RBI, RS), Wilson (2x5, HR, 2 RBI, RS), Chantz Mack (3x4, BB) and Kauppila (2x4, 2B).
Chiefs starter Blake McKnight (2-6) earned his second win - and first in eight starts - after allowing just one run on eight hits in six innings.
Clinton continues their three-game series against Peoria Saturday night at Dozer Park. Right-hander Carlos Misell (6-5, 3.67) will start for Clinton and will be opposed by Chiefs left-hander Rob Kaminsky (1-1, 1.92). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 PM CT.
