Kernels Walk-Off 7-6 over Bees

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA - The Cedar Rapids Kernels stole game two of the series 7-6 over the Burlington Bees in walk-off fashion at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium Saturday evening. A throwing error on a Jason Kanzler bunt in the bottom of the ninth allowed the Kernels to pick up their fourth walk-off win of the season.

Ryan Walker collected two RBIs and two triples while teammate Chad Christensen went 3-for-4 with a two-run home run in the victory. Ryan Murphy and Engelb Vielma each added three hits while Bo Altobelli tallied one RBI during the game. The Kernels pick up 18 total hits in the contest.

Cedar Rapids hitters strung together five consecutive hits to begin the second inning to take a 3-0 lead. Jason Kanlzer led off the streak with a single into right field and was brought in by Ryan Walker's third triple of the season. Bo Altobelli smacked in Walker on a single to left and later scored on a fielder's choice ground ball by Engelb Vielma. Jon Murphy and Zack Granite also tallied singles in the five-hit frame.

Walker continued the scoring in the third with his second RBI of the game. Bryan Haar came in to score on Walker's single to right to make it a 4-0 advantage for Cedar Rapids.

Garrett Nuss exited the hill for Burlington concluding his third inning of work. The starter surrendered four runs, all earned, on eight hits while walking one and striking out four during his 11th start of the year.

Grant Gordon toed the rubber for the Bees to begin the fourth inning of play. The reliever allowed five hits and two runs over three innings in his 11th appearance of the season.

Kohl Stewart left the mound for Cedar Rapids after four innings of work. The right-hander allowed six hits and three walks while striking out three batters in his scoreless no-decision.

Chad Christensen belted his sixth homer of the year to left field to begin the fourth inning where the Kernels took a 6-0 advantage.

Left-handed reliever Josue Montanez entered the game for Cedar Rapids in the fifth. Montanez gave up three runs on three hits during three innings pitched while also walking and striking out one batter.

Burlington's bats came alive in the top of the seventh inning to cut the lead in half. Eric Aguilera hit a two-run triple and later crossed the plate on an RBI-single by Brandon Bayardi in the next at bat to make the score 6-3.

Cole Swanson tossed the seventh for the Bees and allowed one hit and no runs along with two strikeouts during his single-inning outing.

Brandon Bixler hurled the eighth inning for the Kernels. The left-hander surrendered one run on one hit while walking one during his lone frame on the mound.

The Bees would add another run in the eighth when Chad Hinshaw hit an RBI-grounder to second base. Ranyelmy Mendoza scored on the play to make it a 6-4 game.

Ben Carlson (1-1) took the mound for Burlington in the eighth. The reliever gave up one run on four hits while walking one during one full inning pitched.

Hudson Boyd (4-1) entered out of relief to begin the ninth. Boyd surrendered two runs on two solo homers while also recording a strikeout during his one inning on the mound.

Mike Fish and Eric Aguilera each hit solo home runs to open the top of the ninth. The two blasts tied the game 6-6.

The Kernels took the game in the bottom of the ninth when a mishandled Jason Kanlzer bunt allowed Mitch Garver to score. Burlington pitcher Ben Carlson's throw to first on the bunt went into the Kernels' bullpen and allowed for the walk-off 7-6 victory.

The Kernels play Burlington for the final game of the first half on Sunday at 2:05 p.m.
