Tony Gwynn Named Brewers' Minor League Player-of-the-Month For May

NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Nashville Sounds outfielder Tony Gwynn has been named as the Milwaukee Brewers' Minor League Player-of-the-Month for May.

The 23-year-old led Nashville with a .363 batting average (41-for-113) in his 29 games in the month, adding 23 runs scored, 10 stolen bases, three doubles, one triple, one homer, and eight RBIs. His .363 average ranked 15th among Pacific Coast League batters.

Gwynn, the Sounds' leadoff hitter, has been swinging a hot bat of late, recording multiple-hit efforts in seven of his last eight contests and hitting safely in 20 of his last 24 games at a .396 clip (40-for-101).

The young outfielder leads the PCL and ranks third among all minor-leaguers with 74 hits. Gwynn ranks among the PCL top five in runs (40) and steals (16). His .333 average is currently tied for 8th in the league.

Gwynn, the son of future MLB Hall of Fame outfielder Tony Gwynn, is in his first season of Triple-A ball and currently ranks among the top three Sounds batters in games played (55), at-bats (220), runs, hits, doubles (13), triples (two), and stolen bases.

The Nashville Sounds are in action at Greer Stadium this evening when they take on the Albuquerque Isotopes (AAA-Marlins) in the third game of a four-game series. Right-hander Jared Fernandez (1-1, 3.52) will take the hill for the home team to face Albuquerque right-hander Jeff Fulchino (2-3, 4.50).
