JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Birmingham Barons left-hander Matt Tomshaw pitched six innings against his former club, and center fielder Luis Basabe hit a two-run home run in a three-run third inning that led a 3-1 win over the Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp in front of 1,903 on VyStar Credit Union Charity Begins at Home Monday at the Baseball Grounds of Jacksonville.

Jacksonville right-hander Nick Neidert (11-7) began with two perfect innings, before Birmingham (28-29 second half, 60-65 overall) took the lead in the third inning. Shorstop Danny Mendick hit a leadoff double to right field, and left fielder Joel Booker hit a two-out RBI double to center field. Basabe battled Neidert for nine pitches before homering to the right-field bleachers to extend the lead to 3-0. Neidert allowed two more hits in the fourth inning before departing after allowing three earned runs on five hits and one walk with four strikeouts in four innings.

A Jacksonville University alumnus who pitched parts of three seasons for Jacksonville in the Miami Marlins organization from 2015 to 2017, Tomshaw (5-7) worked around two hits in the first inning, escaping when center fielder Monte Harrison was caught between third base and home plate for the final out. The Jumbo Shrimp (22-33, 50-73) broke the shutout in the bottom of the fourth inning, when third baseman Brian Schales hit a one-out solo home run to left field, giving him a career-high 10 this season. Tomshaw allowed five hits and one walk with seven strikeouts.

After Neidert, Jacksonville right-hander Kolton Mahoney pitched two scoreless innings, before left-hander Miguel Del Pozo, left-hander Jeff Kinley and right-hander Tommy Eveld each pitched a scoreless frame.

From the Barons bullpen, right-hander Zach Thompson worked around two hits - including Harrison's two-out triple in the eighth inning - for two scoreless innings. In the ninth inning, right-hander Jose Ruiz allowed Schales' leadoff infield single and walked first baseman John Silviano before striking out right fielder John Norwood and designated hitter Eric Jagielo to end the game with his 13th save.

UP NEXT: The Jumbo Shrimp continue their series with Birmingham at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday, when Jacksonville right-hander Robert Dugger (5-5) is scheduled to face Barons left-hander Bernardo Flores (2-4).
