Indianapolis Indians News Release
INDIANAPOLIS - Canaan Smith-Njigba and Ji-Hwan Bae each extended their respective on-base streaks, but the Toledo Mud Hens offense exploded for double-digit runs in a 12-2 win over the Indianapolis Indians on Saturday night at Victory Field.
Both Smith-Njigba and Bae walked in the sixth inning to extend their streaks. Smith-Njigba is currently working an International League-leading 23-game on-base streak, while Bae follows closely behind with a 20-gamer.
The Indians (20-19) committed six errors in the contest, their highest in a single game dating back to 2005. Half of their runs allowed were unearned due to the defensive miscues.
The Mud Hens (21-18) took a 2-1 lead in the top of the fifth inning off Blake Weiman (L, 0-1) before erupting for six runs in the sixth and four in the seventh. Kody Clemens continued his hot streak at Victory Field this week, going 3-for-4 with a pair of triples.
Indianapolis also scored both of its runs with the aid of defensive miscues. Ji-Hwan Bae reached base safely on dropped fly ball in left field and scored on a double play off the bat of Mason Martin two batters later. In the sixth, Jason Delay led off with a single off Markus Solbach (W, 1-0) and scored on a Cal Mitchell sacrifice fly after a fielding error at second base extended the inning.
Travis Swaggerty led Indy's offense with three hits, marking his second consecutive multi-hit game. Cal Mitchell followed with two hits for his team-leading 11th multi-hit game of the season.
The Indians will look to clinch a series victory in the series finale vs. Toledo tomorrow at 1:35 PM ET. RHP Cody Bolton (1-1, 3.86) will take the mound vs. Game 1 starter LHP Joey Wentz (0-2, 4.38)
