Tobs Lose to Edenton 9-7

WILSON N.C. (July 12, 2011)-The Edenton Steamers used a big first inning to jump out on the Wilson Tobs. The Steamers got five runs in the first inning on four base hits with one walk and two Tobs errors. Edenton had a 5-0 led after a half of an inning and never looked back.

The Tobs starting pitcher Craig Goodman who fell to (2-2) gave up 4 hits in the first inning. The Tobs committed two errors and 5 runs (3 Earned) crossed home plate. Edenton had their first four batters reach base, and each one came around to score. The big blow in the inning was a 2 run double by Brian Blasik. After the top of the first Edenton lead 5-0.

The Tobs trimmed the lead in the bottom of the third when they scored two runs. Angelo LaBruna led off with a double and Keith Morrisroe singled to extend his on base streak to an even 20 games. Wilson had runners on first and third with nobody out. Zac Mitchell hit a sac fly to score LaBruna and then after Morrisroe was at third base Ryan Mathews got a single to make the score 5-2 Edenton.

The Steamers came right back in the top of the 4th inning. After two lead off singles and then a stolen base put runners on 2nd and third with zero outs, Adam Giacalone singled both runners home. The Steamers lead was extended back to five runs.

The Tobs drew closer again the bottom of the fifth when CPL All-Star Tony Wieber singled home Mitchell. The score after 5 full was 7-3 Edenton.

The Steamers pushed the lead back to five in the Top of the sixth when Joe Wendle walked and then scored on a Zach Stewart double, which hugged the right field line. Edenton led 8-3 going to the bottom of the sixth.

In the bottom of the seventh Ryan Mathews hit his CPL leading 11 th home run. Mathews who will represent the Tobs in the CPL All- Star game on Sunday hammered a fastball over the scoreboard in left field. Keith Morrisroe was on third base when Mathews hit the homer, closing the gap to 8-5.

Edenton bounced back again in the top of the eighth inning to when they added an insurance run. Tim Saunders singled to start the rally. Brett Christopher walked and then Zach Stewart blooped a single to center field, which scored Saunders. The Steamers lead was now at 9-5.

Wilson made it real interesting in the ninth when pinch hitter Garrett Davis singled to right field to start the ninth. Morrisroe and Mitchell both walked to load the bases and bring the tying run to the plate. Joe Costigan got his 4th hit of the night, a single that scored Davis from third. All other base runners only advanced one base. With the bases still loaded Mathews strolled to the plate representing the winning run. Mathews hit the 2-1 pitch on the ground to first base and that started the 3-6-3 double play. Another run came into score cutting the Wilson deficit to two runs. Tony Wieber represented the tying run at the plate but grounded weakly to short to end the game. The Wilson Tobs lost their ninth game of the season to the Edenton Steamers by a score of 9-7. The game was played in three hours and nineteen minutes.

The Wilson Tobs will Travel to Kill Devil Hills to take on the Outer Banks Daredevils at 7:05pm. The Tobs will try to snap their current three game-losing streak. The pitching match up for the two clubs has yet to be announced.
