Forest City Owls News Release
GASTONIA, N.C. - The Forest City Owls defeated the Gastonia Grizzlies, 9-2, on Tuesday night at Sims Legion Park. The Owls improve to 7-3 in the second half and 23-14 overall, while the Grizzlies fall to 4-6 in the second half and 17-20 overall.
Danny Healey (N.C. State) took the mound for the Owls. Healey threw 6 2/3 innings, allowing two runs on seven hits, striking out six batters and walking two. The Grizzlies sent Ben Carlson (Furman) to the hill. Carlson tossed 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits, recording two strikeouts and without surrendering a walk. Healey took the win and Carlson was saddled with the loss.
Gastonia struck first in the bottom of the first inning when Justin Vsquez (Belmont Abbey) doubled to left center field, bringing Dallas Burke (Missouri Southern State) home. Forest City returned fire in the top of the second. With Danny Canela (N.C. State) on third after leading off the inning with a double and being moved to third on Jordan Betts' (Duke) sacrifice bunt, Grizzlies SS Joe Ramrez (Lee) bobbled an Axel Johnson groundball, allowing Canela to score. The game was tied 1-1 after two innings.
Cameron Conner (N.C. State) put the Owls ahead in the top of the third inning. Conner ripped a double down the left field line, allowing Reed Harper (Austin Peay) to score. Forest City held a 2-1 lead heading into the seventh inning.
Forest City loaded the bases in the top of the seventh inning. With two outs and the bases juiced, Canela sent a double into the left-center gap, clearing the bags. Konstantine Diamaduros (Wofford), Harper, and Dusty Quattlebaum (Gardner-Webb) scored. Gastonia got a run back in the bottom of the seventh when Tyler White (Western Carolina) smacked a triple into the right-center gap, scoring Jordan Lurie (UNC Asheville). Forest City led 5-2 after seven frames.
The Owls scored four runs in the top of the eighth inning. The first run came home when Diamaduros singled to left field, bringing Axel Johnson (TCU) home. DIamaduros' RBI single was his 158th career hit, putting him in a tie with Will Skinner, his former Owls teammate, for the top spot in the CPL's all-time career hits list. The Owls led 9-2 through eight innings. Brennan Huelse (Virginia Commonwealth) and Colby Suggs (Arkansas) combined to shut out the Grizzlies in the final 2 1/3 innings of the ballgame.
The Owls and Grizzlies will square off again tomorrow night at McNair Field. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM. Owls fans are encouraged to pack the house tomorrow evening for the chance to watch Diamaduros break one of the Coastal Plain League's most hallowed records.
