MARTINSVILLE, V.A. - The HiToms scored nine runs but had to survive a late-inning Martinsville rally at Hooker Field on Tuesday night as the Tommies picked up a 10-9 win over the Mustangs.
Up by a run entering the ninth inning, the HiToms (8-3) added some insurance as Jacob Fisher singled off the glove of a diving Justin Sizemore at first to score Chaz Fank and give the Tommies a 10-8 advantage.
Travis Tingle (S, 8) worked the ninth inning and allowed the tying run to reach third base with two outs after a sacrifice fly by Preston Lyon brought the Mustangs to within a run.
Martinsville (4-5) trailed 9-1 as they entered the seventh inning and managed to make a comeback against the HiToms bullpen as they scored seven runs over the seventh and eighth inning against John Fees and Tingle. Fees pitched the seventh and into the eighth and allowed four runs on as many hits an Tingle allowed three runners to touch the plate on a two-run double from Mike Anderson.
Leading by two runs at 3-1, the HiToms took a big lead with four runs in the fourth inning to take a commanding 7-1 lead. In the frame, the first six hitters reached base as they chased Tyler Carmon (L, 2-3) from the game. Brock Hebert, Jacob Fisher and Patrick Koontz all had RBI for the Tommies.
The lead for the HiToms grew to eight runs in the sixth inning with two more runs on RBI base hits from Hebert and Garrett Koster and after six the Tommies had a 9-1 lead.
Prior to the four run inning, Martinsville had cut the HiToms lead to two-runs as they scored a run against Barbeck (W, 1-2) on a double from Ian Harvey and a John Fairclouth sacrifice fly.
Barbeck had his best outing of the season for the Tommies going six innings allowing just one run while scattering five hits and striking out five.
The Tommies are back at Finch Field on Wednesday night at 7:00 as they entertain the Martinsville Mustangs. It will be another Mighty Dollar Wednesday with hot dogs, 12 ounce fountain drinks and beer on sale for just one dollar.
