Marlins Sweep Blowfish

July 12, 2011 - Coastal Plain League (Coastal Plain)
Lexington County Blowfish News Release

For the second straight night the Morehead City Marlins put up double digits on the Columbia Blowfish to sweep the two game series with a 13-4 victory at Big Rock Stadium on Tuesday night. The Marlins scored 25 runs over the two games to take a 5-1 lead in the season series.

The Marlins (5-5, 19-19) batted around twice in the game. Morehead City put a seven-spot on Blowfish (3-6, 12-25) starter Pat Ludwig in the third inning. Ludwig (1-5) went three innings allowing the seven runs on nine hits. He picked up his first win of the season in his last start against Gastonia.

Six Marlins batters had multiple hits in the game. Chase McDonald led the way with a 3-for-5 performance including three runs scored and three driven in. He hit an RBI double in the third and later scored as part of the seven run inning, which was all Marlins starter Christian Malbrough (1-1) would need. Malbrough went seven innings allowing four runs on eight hits and three walks while striking out five.

All of those runs came in the top of the fourth inning. With the bases loaded Carlos Santana hit an RBI single. Since he went 0-for-9 in a home-and-home against Gastonia last week, Santana has hit safely in three straight games including a 3-for-4 night on Tuesday.

Later in the inning Reggie Weatherford would clear the bases with a three-run double to put the Blowfish back in contention. Weatherford went 1-4 on the day. The Marlins strike back with another run in the bottom of the fourth and five in the fifth to put away Columbia.

The teams combined for 54 hits in the two games this week. The Blowfish had 11 hits in each game and have now gotten double digit hits in three straight games. They now rank third in the Coastal Plain League in batting average and slugging percentage and fourth in hits.

The Blowfish continue their four-game road trip on Wednesday in Wilmington. The Sharks split a double header against Fayetteville on Tuesday. The Blowfish return to Capital City Stadium on Friday to host a double header of their own against the Florence RedWolves.
