
Edenton Wins Tenth of Second Half

WILSON, NC - Edenton scored five times in the top of the first against Wilson and never looked back as Benny Mejia won his first start of the season, pitching five innings and allowing only two earned run.
Edenton did the majority of its damage in the top of the first against Tobs starter Craig Goodman. Brett Christopher led-off the inning with a walk and then the Steamers picked up three straight singles. Zach Stewart drove in a run, picking up his 18th RBI of the season. Adam Giacalone followed with an RBI single. Vinnie Mejia hit an RBI ground out to make it 3-0 Steamers. Brian Blasik hit an RBI double and Nick Gaeta hit a sacrifice fly to finish the scoring. Heading to the bottom of the first it was 5-0 Steamers.
Wilson got two back in the bottom of the third after Angelo Labruna led-off with a double. Keith Morrisroe reached on an infield single and Zac Mitchell got Wilson on the board with a sacrifice fly. After Joe Costigan doubled, Ryan Mathews plated Morrisroe with a single and it was 5-2 Steamers.
The Steamers matched Wilson's two runs with two of their own in the top of the fourth. Back-to-back singles started the inning. Two batters later, with two outs Adam Giacalone hit a two-run single to increase the Steamer lead to 7-2 Steamers.
Wilson stayed in the game with a run in the bottom of the fifth when Zac Mitchell reached on an infield single. Joe Costigan singled behind Mitchell. Tony Wieber with two outs reached on an infield single that Mitchell scored on to make it 7-3.
Edenton evened the score with a run in the top of the 6th on an RBI double by Zach Stewart to make it 8-3 Steamers.
Ryan Mathews crushed a pitch from Adam Giacalone in the bottom of the seventh for his 11th home run of the season, one shy of the Tobs franchise record. The home run made it 8-5 Steamers.
In the top of the eighth against Chad Ghirodo, Tim Saunders singled, Brett Christopher walked and with one out Zach Stewart singled home Saunders for his third RBI of the game to make it 9-5 Steamers.
Wilson made it interesting in the ninth loading the bases with a run already in off of Ethan Cole after Joe Costigan singled home Garrett Davis. With the bases still loaded Ryan Mathews hit into a 3-6-3 double play to bring the second run of the inning home. Tony Wieber grounded to short stop to end the game. The Steamers were victorious 9-7. With the win Edenton guarantees a winning record in 2011 against their North Division rival.
Benny Mejia, in his first start went five innings. He allowed nine hits, three runs (two earned), he walked one and struck out six to earn his first victory of the season.
Craig Goodman pitched 5.2 innings for Wilson and allowed eight runs (six earned). Goodman walked two and struck four. Goodman fell to 2-2 in the losing effort.
Edenton improved to 10-1 in the second half and 29-9 overall. Wilson fell 3-7 in the second half and 18-20 overall.
