Tobs Fall to Steamers 2-1

EDENTON N.C. (August 1, 2011)- The Edenton Steamers defeated the Wilson Tobs by a score of 2-1 on Monday Night in Edenton North Carolina. The game featured a pitchers duel totaling just eight total hits. Edenton defeated the Tobs in the season series 13-2. The Tobs were 0-8 against Edenton at Historic Hicks Field in 2011.

The Wilson Tobs scored first as Ryan Mathews doubled home Joe Costigan who walked earlier in the inning. The RBI by Mathews tied the Tobs single season record with 40. Mathews pulled even with Mark English who knocked in 40 runs in the summer of 2000. The score after one inning was Wilson 1 and Edenton 0.

Edenton scored a run in the bottom of the 4th inning when the Tobs committed their second error of the game. Nathan Burns hit a ball on the ground to first base and the flip to the bag got away allowing a run to scamper home for the Steamers. The game was tied 1-1 going to the fifth inning.

The game remained tied going to the bottom of the eighth inning with just five combined hits between the two teams. The Steamers had three base hits and the Tobs had two.

The bottom of the eighth began with a single up the middle by Brett Christopher. The Steamers later got a hit on by Bo Bigham. Edenton was threatening with two runners on base, but Vinnie Mejia flew out to center field to end the threat.

Tyler King Wilson's starting pitcher had his best outing of the season. King pitched eight innings allowing just five base hits with three strikeouts and just two walks. Tyler allowed just one run it was un-earned. Edenton also had a great day on the mound but used more than one pitcher. Eddie Perkins, Jordan Moore and Jordan Egan combined to pitch nine innings allowing just two base hits with eight strikeouts and only surrendering one walk.

In the bottom on the ninth the Wilson Tobs sent Lance Honeycutt to the mound and he allowed a base hit to Nathan Burns, and then walked Adam Giacalone. Ryan Brenner than reached on an error loading the bases to bring up Brett Christopher. Christopher chopped an infield single to third base, which scored Nathan Burns. The Steamers won the ball game 2-1.

Honeycutt is the losing pitcher and his record falls to 1-5. The winning pitcher was Jordan Egan improving his record to 4-1. The game was played in just two hours and nine minutes.

The Wilson Tobs will conclude the 2011 season on Tuesday night at 7:05pm in Fleming Stadium vs. the Columbia Blowfish. It will be the 2nd meeting of the season for the two clubs. The Tobs won the first match-up of the season in Columbia by a score of 14-8 on June 13th. Tuesday Night will be Fan Appreciation night make sure to stop by Fleming Stadium to watch the Tobs one final time in 2011.
