Morehead City Marlins News Release

Morehead City, N.C. - The Morehead City Marlins were defeated in both games of Monday night's doubleheader, as they hosted the Wilmington Sharks and lost by the scores of 10-6 and 3-2. The Marlins fall to a 27-28 overall record for the season and below .500 for the sixth separate occasion this season.

The first game of the night saw a competitive 5-5 tie go into extra innings and erupt into a 10-6 victory for Wilmington based on a five-run top of the eighth inning. Sharks left fielder Kenny Bryant pulled a grand slam over the wall in right-center to accelerate Wilmington after the Marlins scored a run to tie it in the bottom of the seventh. Down by five in the bottom of the eighth, catcher Drew Woodall led off with a home run that skyrocketed past the Big Rock Stadium scoreboard in left-center to bring it within four, but it simply wasn't enough.

The nightcap proved to be quite the pitchers' duel between two unsuspected starters, with the Sharks coming out on top 3-2. For Morehead City, Tyler Boraz made just his second start of the summer and matched up against Wilmington's Emilio Pagan, who was starting his first game on the mound for the Sharks. Boraz went 4.1 innings and gave up two runsjust one earnedon one hit, and Pagan finished five innings of work having given up two earned on two hits and striking out eight.

The difference came in the top of the sixth inning when Marlins reliever Adam Norton was in his second frame of work and dealt to Wilmington's Daniel Aldrich to lead off the side. With a 3-0 count, Aldrich took a big risk and hit the jackpot when a mishit pitch that he turned too quickly on made its way over the fence in left. Using his sheer strength, Aldrich gave the Sharks the 3-2 lead that would stay until the game went final.

Morehead City wraps up the regular season by hosting Wilmington again on Tuesday for a single, nine-inning game. It is Two For Tuesday at Big Rock Stadium, as well as Communities in Schools Stuff the Bus Night. Gates open at 6 o'clock for the 7:05 matchup that will ultimately determine the Marlins' postseason fate.
