Forest City Owls News Release
COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Forest City Owls defeated the Columbia Blowfish, 5-3, Sunday evening at Capital City Stadium. The Owls improve to 14-12 in the second half and 30-23 overall, while the Blowfish fall to 10-16 in the second half and 19-35 overall.
Jeremy Fant (Rice) received the starting nod for Forest City, working five innings of three-run ball. Fant gave up five hits and recorded three strikeouts to go along with two walks. Columbia's Austin Pritcher (The Citadel) got knocked around early and often, allowing five runs (four earned) on two hits in three innings of work. Fant earned his fifth victory of the season, while Pritcher took his team-leading sixth loss of the summer. Adam Izokovic (Gardner-Webb) got his tenth save of the season.
Pritcher loaded the bases with nobody out in the top of the first inning. Although the Owls were able to muster one run when Buddy Sosnoskie (Francis Marion) trotted home on Craig Manuel's (Rice) walk, Pritcher struck out the following three batters to limit the damage.
The Owls added another run in the top of the second inning on Sosnoskie's sacrifice fly to left field that scored Jordan Betts (Duke). Columbia got on the board in the bottom of the frame when Dedric Mingo (Limestone) lifted a sacrifice fly to left that sent Chase Vergason (South Carolina) home. Forest City led 2-1 after two innings.
Manuel led off the Owls' half of the third with a towering solo home run over the right field wall. Five at-bats later, Michael Basil (Indiana) singled home Danny Canela (N.C. State). Basil's RBI base hit was followed by Buddy Sosnoskie's infield single, which pushed Justin Britt (Southeastern CC) home. The Owls led 5-1 after three innings.
Columbia retaliated with a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth inning. Mingo smacked a single into left field, scoring Vergason. Carlos Santana (Tusculum) followed that up with a sacrifice fly to center, allowing Nick Abrahamson (Virginia Commonwealth) to score. The Owls saw their lead cut in half, 5-3, heading into the fifth inning. Neither team could muster much offensively from that point on. Forest City's Ryan Tezak (West Virginia) and Adam Izokovic (Gardner-Webb) combined to throw four scoreless innings in relief, allowing only one hit.
Forest City's Betts finished 3-for-4 with a run scored. Sosnoskie and Manuel each went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and a run scored for the Owls. Columbia's Vergason went 2-for-4 with two runs scored and two doubles.
The Owls will play their final home game of the regular season tomorrow night when they host the Gastonia Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:30 PM from McNair Field.
