Edenton Steamers News Release

EDENTON, NC - Three Edenton pitchers combined to hold the Wilson Tobs to just two hits over nine innings, retiring the final 19 Tobs of the game in the 2-1 walk-off victory.

Eddie Perkins made his first start of the season for the Steamers. Wilson took advantage of the one walk allowed by Perkins in his outing. Joe Costigan walked and Ryan Mathews followed with an RBI double to put Wilson up 1-0 in the game. The RBI was the 40th of the season for Mathews, who tied the Tobs Franchise record for RBI in a season with the hit.

Perkins, after allowing the run, shut the door over the next three innings. He allowed only two more base runners, both in the third in his four innings of work.

Edenton plated the equalizer in the bottom of the fourth. After Zach Stewart led off with a single, Bo Bigham moved him to second base with a ground out. Vinnie Mejia walked and Nathan Burns reached on an error. Stewart rounded third and scored the tying run for Edenton while Burns was caught in a run down. Mejia, thinking he could score the go ahead before Burns was tagged out, broke for the plate. Keith Morrisroe threw home in plenty of time to get Mejia and preserve the 1-1 tie.

Jordan Moore came into the game in relief of Perkins and retired 12 straight Tobs over his four innings of work for Edenton.

Tyler King, for Wilson, pitched eight complete innings allowing five hits, all singles, and one run (unearned). He walked two and struck out three batters. Though King did not factor into the decision tonight, he pitched outstanding baseball for Wilson in his start.

Lance Honeycutt came into the game in the bottom of the ninth after Jordan Egan retired the Tobs in order in the top half of the ninth. Honeycutt allowed a single to Nathan Burns with one out. He then walked Adam Giacalone and Ryan Brenner singled to load the bases. Brett Christopher hit a chopper up the third base line. Brandon Elliot charged it while Burns broke for the plate with the winning run. Elliot tried a shovel pass to the catcher Holberton, but it sailed wide of the glove and Burns slid in safely to give Edenton the 2-1, walk-off win.

Jordan Egan improved to 4-1 with his perfect ninth inning of relief, while Lance Honeycutt fell to 1-5 on the season.

Edenton improved to 43-11 overall and 24-3 in the second half. Wilson dropped to 24-31 overall and 9-18 in the second half. Edenton will close out the 2011 regular season tomorrow night at home against the Outer Banks DareDevils.
