Trenton Devils News Release
TRENTON, NJ - The Trenton Titans were edged out by the Wheeling Nailers, 5-4, in their regular season finale on Saturday night at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
Though the Titans led 3-2 heading into the second period, a trio of goals posted by the Nailers proved to be the difference. Joe Jensen got the scoring started with a power play goal at 7:32 of the frame to the tie the score. Wheeling then took their first lead of the game with 4:31 left until the break as Jonathan Foster cut into the slot and snuck a backhander inside the near post. With 2.7 seconds remaining in the second and the Nailers skating on the man-advantage, Sean Collins skated to the hash marks and tipped Ned Havern's wrist shot from the near circle into the net for the eventual game-winner.
Goaltender Matt Modelski - making his professional debut out of Yale University - was relieved after the middle frame in favor of local product, Matt Conti. Modelski finished the contest with 13 saves on 18 shots.
Conti kept the Titans in the game and gave them a chance to tie the score, stopping all 10 shots he faced in the third. Trenton in turn got back with one with a power play goal by Troy Riddle, who tipped Mark Pandolfo's centering pass over a diving Andy Franck. Franck made big stops down the stretch - 25 saves overall - to deny the Titans in their bid to knot the score.
Trenton looked good early in the contest going up 2-0 as Chris Capraro notched a power play marker - the first goal of his pro career - and Mark Pandolfo banged home his 19th of the season over a span of 1:38.
Former Titans Vin Hellemeyer and Havern were both the recipients of odd-man rushes that made the score 2-2 at 15:29 of the first, but Pierre-Luc Leblond 's backhander through traffic in front put Trenton back up top with 33.8 left until the first intermission.
Trenton went 2-for-6 on the power play and 1-for-3 on the penalty kill.
The Titans now get ready for their best-of-three North Division Quarterfinal series against the Johnstown Chiefs beginning Monday, April 9 at 7:00pm at the Sovereign Bank Arena.
