Gwinnett's Fretter Named CCM Tacks Rookie Of The Year

PRINCETON, N.J. - The ECHL on Saturday that Gwinnett forward Colton Fretter is the recipient of the CCM Tacks Rookie of the Year award for 2006-07.

The award is presented annually to the player selected as the most proficient in his first year of competition in the ECHL as voted by the coaches of the ECHL teams.

Texas defenseman Paul Albers finished second and Alaska forward Julian Talbot was third while Cincinnati goaltender Cedrick Desjardins and Gwinnett defenseman Jamie Milam tied for fourth in the voting.

Selected to the ECHL All-Rookie Team on Wednesday, Fretter leads ECHL rookies with 36 goals, 18 power-play goals and 66 points in 50 games. He was injured on Feb. 14 and missed 21 games before returning to the lineup on Friday. Selected in the eighth round (230th overall) by Atlanta in the 2002 National Hockey League Draft and under American Hockey League contract to the Chicago Wolves, he ranks third overall in power-play goals and is tied for fifth in goals. The 25-year-old had a 16-game point streak (15g-12a) when he was injured at Florida on Feb. 14, including scoring a goal in the first period, and registered a point in 39 games. He was named the CCM Vector ECHL Rookie of the Month for October and was selected to the Rbk Hockey ECHL All-Star Game where he scored the game-winning goal for the American Conference in a 6-3 win.
