Bombers Win Division Despite 5-1 Loss In Toledo
April 7, 2007 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release
Toledo, OH- The Dayton Bombers were defeated by the Toledo Storm 5-1 in front of 4,236 fans at the Historic Toledo Sports Arena on Friday night.
Both teams entered the game with something to play for. The Bombers, with only one point or a Cincinnati loss could clinch the Division title and home ice advantage throughout the divisional rounds of the playoffs. The Storm were playing for the third spot and with a Toledo win and a Cincinnati loss, they would then have a chance to take over second place with a win in Dayton on Saturday.
The first period was dominated by the goaltenders, Adam Berkhoel (32 saves, Loss) for the Bombers and Logan Koopmans (36 saves, Win) for the Storm. The Bombers out shot the Storm 15-13 but the game remained scoreless after one period of play.
Toledo broke the scoreless tie and put the Bombers behind 1-0 at the 5:40 mark of the second period when leading scorer Matt Zultek found a loose puck and bounced it in off Berkhoel's pads. Less than two minutes later Nick Parillo gave Toledo a 2-0 lead with a power play goal at the 7:11 mark. Jeff Hristovski (2) answered back for the Bombers and cut the lead down to 2-1 by finishing off a breakaway and sliding a backhand between Koopman's pads at the 8:30 mark. Gerry Burke then was credited for another Toledo goal when a Bombers forward tried to dive on a puck that slipped by Berkhoel, but in the process of trying to save it, he slid the puck into his own net to give the Storm the 3-1 lead at the 13:07 mark. Zultek added his second goal of the night at the 16:29 mark and the Bombers trailed 4-1 heading into the third period.
Despite a strong offensive effort with 13 shots on goal in the third period, the Bombers could not solve Koopmans. Toledo forward Bruce Mulherin tallied another goal just to make sure at the 12:37 mark and Toledo finished off their home finale with a 5-1 victory over the Bombers.
Although the Bombers did not get any points, the Cincinnati Cyclones couldn't hold onto a 2-1 lead in the third period for the second consecutive night and saw the Charlotte Checkers steal one away 3-2. By virtue of that Cincinnati loss, regardless of what happens in the regular season finale at the Nutter Center vs. Toledo on Saturday, the Dayton Bombers are the 2006-07 Northern Division Champions!
The Bombers return to the Nutter Center for the final home game in the 2006-07 regular season on tonight, at 7:00 p.m. to take on their 16 year rivals, the Toledo Storm. The game will also be Fan Appreciation Night which will feature prizes that will be given out to fans ranging from a luxury recliner to restaurant gift certificates. The Columbus Blue Jackets have also supplied a signed team jersey, a Rick Nash autographed mini stick and a Jody Shelley autographed puck. After the game, the Bombers will host their final post game jersey auction on the Verizon Flight Deck.
