Titans Back in the Win Column; Beat Elmira on Road, 2-1
November 17, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Trenton Titans News Release
Elmira, NY - For the first time in two weeks the Trenton Titans, proud ECHL affiliate of the Philadelphia Flyers, finally got to play someone else other than Atlantic Division rival Reading. And while they stayed inside their division, for the first time in two weeks the Titans picked up two points, grabbing a solid, 2-1 road victory over Elmira Friday night.
With the win the Titans (6-6-0-1, 13 points) stop their six-game winless streak while adding to the Jackals' woes. Not only have they caught Elmira (6-6-1, 13 points) to tie for second in the division, they have also pushed the Jackals' winless streak to six (0-5-1), handing them just their second loss at home in the process.
The biggest key in the win was the Titans' ability to not only limit the Jackals' chances on the power play, but keep them off the board as well. With the league's best PP at home (35.7) and overall (29.3), Elmira was held scoreless in just two tries, while even allowing a short-handed goal while on the man-advantage.
Justin Taylor, in his first game with Trenton since coming over in a trade with Kalamazoo, converted the shorty on a 2-on-1 rush, with Kory Nagy feeding him perfectly on the left post. Taylor went top shelf for his first goal and a 1-0 lead, 9:20 into the second period.
Seven minutes later it was Stephen Schultz that bumped the lead to 2-0 with his fifth of the season. Taking a pass from Ray DiLauro, Schultz bolted in from the left circle and lifted a shot over Marc Cheverie (4-3, 29 saves) into the top-right corner.
Niko Hovinen (2-3-0-1, 20 saves) was solid between the pipes to break a personal four-game winless streak of his own. Only a nice poke by Elmira of a loose puck to a wide open Jack Downing 8:19 of the third stopped his chances at a first career professional shutout.
Elmira had a golden opportunity to send the game into overtime after pulling Cheverie in the final minute, but a cross-ice pass to the bottom of the left circle handcuffed Jordan Pietrus, who couldn't get a shot on net before time expired.
The Titans and Jackals battle one more time in Elmira's First Arena Saturday night at 7:05 pm. They will meet up again in a couple weeks for a pair of games, December 1-2, at Trenton's Sun National Back Center.
After The Horn
With a 2-for-2 effort tonight, Trenton, the 3rd ranked PK in the ECHL, has killed off 27 straight PP.
With another perfect PK at home (3-for-3), Elmira has not allowed a PPG at home this year (30-for-30).
Trenton is now 6-0-0-1 when scoring first and has not allowed the opposition to get the lead in regulation/OT.
Since last year, the Titans and Jackals have played 13 games decided by two goals or less, eight of which (including OT/SO) were one-goal games (Elmira won six of them).
