Elmira Jackals News Release
ELMIRA, N.Y. - The Elmira Jackals rode the strength of three power play goals to a 5-1 win over the Trenton Titans on Saturday night at First Arena. The win improved Elmira's record to 7-6-1 on the season.
Elmira's power play had produced one goal in 11 chances over its last five games, but it broke out of the slump in a big way against the Titans. With 2:09 gone by in the game Louie Caporusso collected the rebound of Jean Bourbeau's wrist shot and deposited it behind goalie Niko Hovinen. It was Caporusso's second goal of the season, and Jack Downing also assisted. The Titans out-shot Elmira 11 to 7 in the first period, but Maxime Clermont stopped each shot he faced and Caporusso's goal stood up as the difference maker through one.
Elmira started the second period on a power play thanks to a late first-period penalty to Trenton's Ray DiLauro. The Jackals wasted no time building their lead up as Andrew Rowe pushed across Elmira's second power play goal of the game 33 seconds into the stanza. As Rowe scored that goal, Trenton's Ryan Grimshaw was hit with a penalty as well. The Jackals took advantage of that power play when Kyle Bushee unleashed a slap shot from the center point that beat Hovinen high to the stick side. Dustin Gazley picked up his second assist of the game on the goal and Artem Demkov also helped out. The lead ballooned to 4-0 when Rob Bellamy scored off of a rush exactly 10 minutes after Bushee's goal, and Rowe pushed the lead to five with his second goal of the night at 18:21. Clermont swatted away each of the nine shots he faced in the second and Elmira was up by five headed to the third.
The only goal of the final stanza came off of Andy Bombach's stick with 7:50 left to play. His wrist shot from the right wing circle eluded Clermont's outstretched catching glove while Trenton was on the power play. It was the first power play goal the Jackals surrendered on home ice in 33 chances. Each team managed seven shots in the third, but Elmira did no further damage on the scoreboard.
Clermont collected his second win of the season while making 26 saves. Elmira's power play was 3-for-8 on the night and the Jackals were 2-for-3 on the penalty kill.
