November 17, 2012 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Gwinnett, GA: The Road Warriors took the Gladiators to the closing seconds of the game and won 2-1 off a Steven Delisle slapshot with six seconds left.
The game started off in the Gladiators direction as they outshot the Road Warriors 16-6 in the first period. The Gladiators took shots from all parts of the rink but were not able to beat rookie goalie Nathan Lieuwen. Kenndal McArdle took a roughing penalty towards the end of the first which carried into the second.
The Road Warriors were able to kill the penalty to start to the second period which was more balanced than the first. Gwinnett still outshot the Road Warriors 10-9 but play was constant and both teams had multiple opportunities. Connolly broke the scoreless tie four minutes into the period with an unassisted goal where he stepped into the zone on a partial break and beat Mike Lee glove high. More penalties were assessed in the second and Gwinnet was able to capitalize halfway through the period. Rylan Galiardi tipped in his seventh goal of the season with a shot from Dallas Jackson. Casey Pierro-Zabotel also assisted on the powerplay goal. The period closed with a Tyler Murovich holding minor that gave the Road Warriors a man advantage heading into the third.
The third period was just as tight as the first two periods. More chances became available as four penalties were handed out in a matter of two minutes and 20 seconds. A five minute boarding major was handed to Justin Weller as well as a game misconduct. This lead to a more penalties but neither team was able to convert. It took constant pressure in the zone by Brandon Wong in the final seconds who played the puck to the point which Delisle fired past Lee for his first goal of the year. Sean Berkstresser also assisted on the goal and Wong extended his point steak to ten games. Lieuwen, the second star of the game, stopped 33 of 34 shots and the victory in net. Lee took the loss with 25 saves and was the third star. Delisle was the first star of the game.
The road trip will continue on Wednesday night against Elmira. Face-off is 7:05 p.m.
The Road Warriors will return home on November 28th against the Reading Royals. Fans can purchase tickets by visiting the BI-LO Center Box Office or online at ticketmaster.com. To book a group outing, fans can speak to a Road Warriors Account Executive by calling 864-674-PUCK (7825).
