Tireless Knicks Notch First Win on the Road
January 10, 2015 - NBA G League (G League)
Westchester Knicks News Release
WHITE PLAINS, January 10, 2015 - Coming off a heartbreaking loss last night at the Westchester County Center, the Westchester Knicks (8-13) hopped on a plane early this morning to take on the Canton Charge (11-11). A lack of sleep would not stop the Knicks from notching their first ever win on the road, besting the Charge 102-96.
Westchester starters struggled a bit in the first quarter, finding themselves down 27-23 after 12 minutes. But Knicks guard Walker Russell Jr. picked up where he left off last night, heating up the second quarter adding 15 points to push the Knicks to lead 57-51 at the half. Thanasis Antetokounmpo and Darnell Jackson only with two points each, Andre Barrett with four, relied on 29 points off the bench to carry the team in the first half.
The Knicks starters got their second wind in the second half though, capitalizing on Canton's inability to follow through on field goals. With twelve lead changes and seeing nine ties, it was a close game through and through. Orlando Sanchez lit a spark for the Knicks in the fourth with a dunk shot followed by a lay-up off his own rebound. Big Darnell Jackson kept the flame going, scoring eight points in the final eight minutes of the game.
Walker Russell Jr. led the Knicks with 20 points, also adding three rebounds. Orlando Sanchez recorded a double-double, contributing 14 points and 11 rebounds. Marcus Ginyard had 17 points, seven rebounds, and three assists on the night. Andre Barrett and Darnell Jackson rounded out the double digits scorers for the Knicks, with 15 and 13 points respectively.
Charge forward Arinze Onuaku led scoring on the night and notched a double-double with 24 points and 15 rebounds. Guard Antoine Agudio had 20 points, adding five assists. Guard Jorge Gutierrez also recorded a double-double, contributing 15 points and 11 rebounds.
The Westchester Knicks continue their travels to Des Moines to face the Iowa Energy, the official NBA Development league affiliate of the Memphis Grizzlies, at 8:00 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on MSG Network.
Following Iowa, the Knicks will continue on to Santa Cruz, CA for the 2015 NBA D-League Showcase. The league's premiere in-season scouting event, the 2015 NBA D-League Showcase presented by Samsung affords players and coaches the opportunity to flaunt their skills in front of general managers and player personnel executives from all 30 NBA teams. The Westchester Knicks will face the Reno Bighorns on Friday, January 16th at 10:00 p.m. ET and will play the Oklahoma City Blue on Monday, January 19th at 3:45 p.m. ET. Fans can catch the action on NBA TV.
