LAST GAME: On Sunday, the TinCaps fell, 5-3, to the Lake County Captains. Fort Wayne led 3-0 heading into the eighth inning, led by a Robert Hassell two-run home run and seven no-hit innings from Efraín Contreras, Brandon Komar, and Felix Minjarez. But the visitors rallied with a run in the eighth and four in the ninth.
GOOD VIBES ONLY: In their first series of the season at Lansing, the TinCaps won 5 of 6 from April 19-24. That week, the 'Caps outscored the Nuts, 51-28. Offensively, Fort Wayne slashed .295 / .374 / .560 (.934 OPS) with 11 home runs. After the series, Joshua Mears was named the Midwest League's Player of the Week... Faced Osvaldo Berrios in series finale, pitching in relief. Scored 5 runs off him over 4 innings, with 5 hits and 5 walks, and only 2 strikeouts.
PITCHER OF THE WEEK: On Monday, Brandon Komar was named the MWL Pitcher of the Week. The righty pitched 9 scoreless innings with 1 hit, 1 walk, and 8 strikeouts, including a spot start last Tuesday. He has a Midwest League-best 21.2 innings scoreless streak.
ROBERT GASSER: Ranks 3rd in MWL in strikeouts (68), 5th in K/9 (11.7), and 8th in K/BB (4.0). Put another way, he's struck out 31% of the batters he's faced this season... His 3.29 xFIP is 6th lowest in the league. This metric estimates a pitcher's expected run prevention independent of the performance of their defense based on strikeouts, walks, hit by pitches, and fly balls allowed.
ROBERT HASSELL: Was reinstated from the COVID list Saturday after being placed on it June 2. In his return Sunday, he doubled in his first at-bat and hit a two-run homer in the seventh inning. Hassell ranks first in the MWL in batting average (.310), 7th in hits (53), 9th in OBP (.377), and 10th in both SLG (.474) and OPS (.851). He's also 6th in stolen bases (15).
COREY ROSIER: Was reinstated from COVID list Friday after being placed on it June 1. Even with missed time, still ranks 2nd in the MWL in runs (38), 5thin walks (34) and stolen bases (18). He's also 5th in BB/K (0.83) and 8th in BB% (16%).
JACK STRONACH: In the month of June, batting a team-best .323 in 10 games. Stronach also has 5 of the team's 12 doubles this month, while also leading in walks (5) and leads OPS (.916).
K KINGS: TinCaps pitchers lead the 12-team MWL in K/9 (11.18) and rank 2nd in total strikeouts (594), only 2 behind South Bend's 596.
CONTACT: Offensively, the TinCaps have struck out the fewest times in the MWL (8.7 per game). Meanwhile, Fort Wayne ranks 4th in walks drawn (4.1 per game).
CAUGHT 'EM: TinCaps catchers are 3rd in the MWL in caught stealing %. Fort Wayne's backstops have thrown out 26 of 78 attempted base stealers (33%)... Individually, Brandon Valenzuela leads the league in caught stealings, 17 of 51, while Anthony Vilar has nabbed 7 of 19, and Adam Kerner has caught 2 as well.
MISCELLANEOUS: The TinCaps are 18-8 when scoring first (69% win rate) and 4-27 when they don't (13%)... Fort Wayne is 6-7 in 1-run games, and 3-8 in 2-run games.
