Shrum Powers Bandits to Walk-Off Win over Cubs

Davenport, Iowa - The Quad Cities River Bandits claimed their second walk-off victory in their last two home games on Tuesday, as Dillan Shrum's two-run double defeated the South Bend Cubs in game one of a six-game series at Modern Woodmen Park.

After starters Patrick Halligan and DJ Herz tossed a pair of scoreless frames to open the game, each offense got onto the board in the third, with South Bend plating a run on Fabian Pertuz's RBI single before Herard Gonzalez scored Diego Hernandez with one of his own.

The Cubs were quick to respond against Halligan though and retook the lead on a pair of RBI singles off the bats of Yohendrick Pinango and Owen Caissie in the fourth.

While Halligan would go on to pitch 5.0 innings, Herz was replaced by Joe Nahas, who pitched a perfect fourth and fifth out of the Cubs' bullpen.

Jack Aldrich kept Quad Cities' deficit at two until the seventh, when his offense got a jolt from Juan Carlos Negret, who smacked a solo homer off of Sheldon Reed, his second dinger in as many games, before Luca Tresh tied the contest with an RBI groundout.

The Cubs quickly responded again though, retaking the lead 4-3 with another run-scoring single from Pinango in the eighth.

Although Eduarniel Nunez faced the minimum and shut down the Bandits in the bottom of the eighth, Tyler Tolbert opened the bottom of the ninth with an infield single against Hunter Bigge. The next batter, Tresh, worked a walk to put the tying and go-ahead runs on base.

After Diego Hernandez sacrificed himself with a bunt to move both runners to third, the Cubs opted to walk Kale Emshoff to load the bases and put the double play in order for Dillan Shurm, who took the second pitch he saw from Biggie off the left-center field wall for a two-run, game-winning double.

With a scoreless top of the ninth, Emilio Marquez (6-1) earned the win out of the bullpen for Quad Cities, while Bigge (3-2) was charged with his fourth blown save of the season and took the loss.

The Bandits will look for three-straight wins on Wednesday, as they'll start Anthony Simonelli (4-0, 5.31) against South Bend's Manuel Espinoza (3-3, 2.60). First pitch at Modern Woodmen Park is scheduled for 6:30pm.
