Fort Wayne TinCaps News Release
FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The Fort Wayne TinCaps rode stellar pitching to a 6-1 win over the Cedar Rapids Kernels (Minnesota Twins affiliate) at Parkview Field on Wednesday night.
The TinCaps (11-14) sent right-hander Anderson Espinoza to the mound, and he had his strongest start of the season. The No. 12 prospect in the Padres system went three innings for the first time this season, and was perfect. He struck out three and didn't allow a baserunner.
A trio of TinCaps relievers finished the job. Edwuin Bencomo let up just one hit in three innings, Felix Minjarez threw two shutout innings, and Carter Loewen wrapped up the game with a hitless ninth. In total, TinCaps pitchers struck out 12 hitters.
The TinCaps allowed just two hits the entire game. That total tied a season-low, matching the dominance from Fort Wayne pitchers on May 15th on the road against the Lake County Captains.
The first three runs of the game came across in the second. TinCaps third baseman Ethan Skender laced a ball down the left field line, doubling home right fielder Tirso Ornelas. Later in the inning, second baseman Reinaldo Ilarraza singled to plate Skender, and Ilarraza used his base running IQ to allow the third run of the inning to score. Ilarraza intentionally got caught in a run down, buying time for Fort Wayne shortstop Kelvin Melean to cross the plate.
In the sixth, TinCaps catcher Jonny Homza supplied the rest of the offense. He lined a ball to right-center with the bases loaded, clearing the bases with a three-run single.
