TUESDAY AFTERNOON: The TinCaps were shut out by the Bandits, 9-0.

TRENDING UP: Despite Tuesday's loss, the TinCaps have won 7 of their last 12, including a 3-game sweep of Beloit last week. Fort Wayne is 14-12 since beginning the year 0-6. The 'Caps are 4-1-1 over their last 6 series.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY: Justin Lopez turns 18 today and will celebrate by batting fifth and playing shortstop. Lopez is the youngest player in the Midwest League. (Only Nationals infield prospect Luis Garcia, with Class A Hagerstown in the South Atlantic League, is younger in MiLB; Garcia turns 18 next Wednesday). Lopez, who was troubled by back tightness in April, has reached base in 6 consecutive games and leads the team in OPS this month. Over the last 6 games, Lopez has slashed .375/.423/.708 with a homer, 3 doubles, a triple, and 5 RBIs.

ALUMNI REPORT: Former TinCap Josh VanMeter has been promoted by the Reds from Double-A Pensacola to Triple-A Louisville. VanMeter, who was an infielder with the 'Caps in 2014 and '15, is the only everyday player in franchise history from Northeast Indiana. The Ossian, Ind., native was leading the Blue Wahoos in OBP at .420. He split his first 30 games this year across second base, third base, shortstop, and primarily left field (15 games). VanMeter was drafted by the Padres in the 5th round in 2013 out of Norwell High School, but traded to Cincinnati in Dec. 2016 for Luis Torrens, a catcher who spent all of last year with the Padres in the big leagues.

BACK IN THE FORT: The Parkview Sports Medicine High School Baseball Series continues today at Parkview Field with a doubleheader of games at 4:30 and 7. Concordia takes on Wayne in Game 1 followed by Snider and Northrop. The series concludes Thursday with the final batch of games, finishing a cycle that will have featured 12 games and 24 area schools.

HAWKEYE HOMECOMING: TinCaps hitting coach Jonathan Mathews is from Centerville, Iowa, which is about 3 hours southwest of here. Mathews coached at Indian Hills Community College in Ottuma, Iowa, where he also taught economics from 2000-12. Previously, Mathews earned a master's in athletic administration in 2000 at the University of Iowa, where he was a part-time coach from 1995-96.

BACK TO WHERE IT ENDED: The TinCaps were last at Modern Woodmen Park for Game 3 of the 2017 Midwest League Championship Series on Sept. 16. Fort Wayne lost, 12-2, as Quad Cities completed a 3-game sweep.

WHO'S BACK: From last year's roster in the MWL Championship Series, the TinCaps have back manager Anthony Contreras, pitching coach Burt Hooton, fielding coach Jhonny Carvajal, and 4 players (LHP Osvaldo Hernandez, INF Justin Lopez, INF Gabriel Arias, and OF Jack Suwinski).
