West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The combination of extra-base power and a dominating pitching performance from Matt Manning propelled the West Michigan Whitecaps to an 8-5 win over the Clinton LumberKings in the series finale Wednesday afternoon at Fifth Third Ballpark.
After Manning opened the game by allowing a base hit, a "Caps double play erased any potential early trouble. Manning allowed only three more base hits - all singles and walked only one in six innings of work. The Whitecaps offense got involved early off LumberKings starter Oliver Jaskie. After Rey Rivera and Joey Morgan worked walks in the second inning, Ignacio Valdez laced a two-run double, Alexis Garcia followed with a run-scoring single and Cole Peterson completed the four-run inning with an RBI triple of his own. Valdez and Garcia provided run-scoring base hits as part of another four-run inning and an 8-0 advantage. Clinton tried to make it interesting with five earned runs off "Caps reliever Oswaldo Castillo in the seventh and eighth innings, but Wladimir Pinto closed the door with his league-leading seventh save of 2018 and secured the 8-5 victory.
Valdez drove in four runs, while Garcia drove in three for West Michigan. Peterson contributed three hits as well and went 7-for-13 at the plate in the series against Clinton. The Whitecaps salvage the last game of the three-game series and moved to 18-14 overall on the season. Clinton dropped to 17-12 overall and saw their four-game road winning streak come to an end. Manning (1-1) evened his record on the young season for the Whitecaps and recorded eight strikeouts. Jaskie (1-2), the Grandville (MI) high school product, took the loss for Clinton.
