South Bend Cubs News Release
South Bend, IN: Make it two series wins in a row for the South Bend Cubs.
After dropping last night's game to the Burlington Bees, the Cubs rallied back with timely hitting and shut down pitching on Wednesday to beat the Bees 4-2. The game winning hit came in the bottom of the 5th inning when Miguel Amaya launched a high drive over the left field wall to bring in two runs and give South Bend the 4-2 lead.
Amaya finished the afternoon 2/4 with a triple, home run, two runs scored, and two RBI. The 19-year-old has now tied the team lead for home runs along with Michael Cruz with four. Austin Filiere has now gone 2/3 in back-to-back games. Filiere singled twice and also walked against the Bees. For Filiere, his average continues to rise as it now sits at .318 on the campaign.
South Bend finished their day scoring a run in the 2nd and 3rd, then the final two in the 5th. The consistent numbers at the plate were backed up by the pitching. Starter Ricky Tyler Thomas battled early rain and wet conditions but still finished with four innings and four strikeouts. The southpaw allowed two runs on seven hits.
The South Bend bullpen continues to shine in the month of May. Right handers Brendan King and Ben Hecht worked the final five innings on Wednesday. King earned his first victory with the South Bend Cubs by tossing three innings of scoreless ball. His mid 70s' curveball dominated over the course of the three frames as he struck out five. Hecht finished the game and picked up the save. He struck out three of his own in his outing.
After taking two games out of three from Peoria over the weekend, the Cubs now do the same against Burlington with the Clinton LumberKings on their way into town. Clinton, who possesses the best record in the Midwest League Western Division, is 7-3 on the road in 2018.
The Cubs are now back to just three games under .500 at 13-16. After the next three game set against Clinton, South Bend will then travel on a seven-game road trip. Looking to take care of business at Four Winds Field, they will send right hander Javier Assad to the mound on Thursday against the LumberKings.
