West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps felt the wrath of the Clinton LumberKings offense on Tuesday night as part of a 13-1 loss featuring three big innings Tuesday night at Fifth Third Ballpark.
Brady Policelli provided the 'Caps with their only run and lead of the game in the third inning. His double to left-center scored Alexis Garcia and made the score 1-0, but the lead would be brief. 'Caps starter Elvin Rodriguez scattered two doubles in the first three innings and was cruising until the fourth inning, as Clinton responded with five runs. After walking the first three batters, consecutive base hits brought in three runs and the night was over for Rodriguez. The LumberKings finished the inning with a sacrifice fly RBI and RBI single off 'Caps reliever Clate Schmidt.
Three more runs in the fourth inning and another five runs hung up in the fifth by the LumberKings gave Clinton starter Ray Kerr all the margin he needed as he proved solid in five innings of work. Clinton sent 26 men to the plate in the middle three innings and scored all 13 of their runs in the contest.
Kerr (1-2) earned his first victory of 2018, allowing only four 'Caps hits and the one run while striking out five. Burris Warner halted the Clinton juggernaut by throwing 3.2 relief innings of four-hit, no-run baseball with five strikeouts. Clinton pounded out 16 hits - six for extra bases. West Michigan mustered only five hits all night. Rodriguez (2-2) gave up five earned runs and four hits in the loss, as West Michigan dropped their second straight game in the series and fell to 17-14 overall. Clinton remained in first place in the Western Division of the Midwest League by improving to 17-11 on the season. After a spirited 11-3 start to the season, the last 17 games have resulted in a record of 6-11 for the Whitecaps.
