ABOUT LAST NIGHT: The TinCaps fell to the Loons, 16-9. Justin Lopez hit his 7th homer of the year in the losing cause.
CANTILLO REPEATS AS POTW: For the 2nd week in a row, lefty Joey Cantillo won the Midwest League's Pitcher of the Week Award. He tossed a career-long 8 scoreless innings with 9 strikeouts against South Bend last Wednesday. Cantillo carried a no-hitter through 6.1 innings before he eventually conceded 2 singles. (He also hit 2 batters.) The 19-year-old became the first TinCaps pitcher to go 8 scoreless since Mark Hardy on Sept. 9, 2011 in a playoff game. The last Fort Wayne pitcher to go 8 scoreless in the regular season was Cory Kluber on Aug. 19, 2008 versus Lansing. Cantillo has thrown 22.2 consecutive scoreless frames, including 6 scoreless with a career-best 10 Ks at Great Lakes on June 20... Cantillo's 1.71 ERA is the 3rd lowest in MiLB while his .152 average against is the lowest in MiLB. See Page 3 for more.
WEEKDAY WONDERS: For what it's worth... the TinCaps are 28-15 in games played Monday-Thursday, but 8-28 in games on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
LONG SUMMER NIGHTS: The average length of the last 5 games for the TinCaps has been 3:23. Each of their last 4 games has exceeded 3 hours, including a 4:07 affair Saturday. The average temperature for the last 5 games has been 92 degrees, and Monday night's 93-degree temperature at first pitch set a new season high.
X IS A FACTOR: Infielder Xavier Edwards was the MWL Eastern Division's leadoff batter and starting second baseman in the All-Star Game and this explains why... He leads the league in batting average (.338), is tied for 2nd among active MWL players in OBP (.392) and is 4th in stolen bases (19). Edwards also has the 2nd lowest swinging strike % (4%), the 5th lowest K% (11%), and the 9th best BB/K (0.77)... 47% of the balls he's put into play have been hit the opposite way, the highest rate in the league... 29 of his league-high 97 hits have come on the first pitch of an AB as he's hit .483 in 0-0 counts... Edwards is currently on a 6-game hitting streak, batting .462 during that time with 2 doubles, a triple, and a HR (SLG% of .731).
MAKING HIS MARK: Infielder Tucupita Marcano led all TinCaps hitters with a .435 (10-23) average during the recent 7-game homestand, smacking two doubles and driving in 5 runs...Marcano is tied for the 2nd lowest K% in the MWL (9.9%) and has the 4th lowest swinging strike % (4.7%).
MEXICAN POWER: Outfielder Agustin Ruiz has launched 4 homers over his last 18 games after not homering in his first 51 games of the season. Over his last 15 games, since June 12, Ruiz has slashed .350/.375/.567 (.942 OPS). In this span, his BA is 4th in the MWL, while his OPS ranks 6th... His 42 RBIs on the year tie him for 10th in the MWL... 22% of the balls he's put in play have been line drives, the 7th highest LD% in the league.
PLAY THE HITS, J-LO: Infielder Justin Lopez is batting .500 (6-12) over his last 3 games... The 19-year-old smacked his team-leading 7th home run on Monday night... Lopez matched his TinCaps career-high with 3 hits on Sunday... This recent hot streak at the plate comes after a stretch of 7 consecutive games without a hit (0-for-26 with 1 walk and 8 strikeouts).
