Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Bowling Green has swept each of the last two series and has tied their season-long win streak of seven games.
About Last Night... Easton McGee held the Lansing Lugnuts to one run over seven innings while Tony Pena had three hits and an RBI in the Bowling Green Hot Rods 4-1 victory to finish a three-game sweep of the Lugnuts on Monday night. Bowling Green broke a scoreless tie in the fourth inning against Lansing starter Troy Watson. With one out, Seaver Whalen singled to right to extend his hit streak to eight-games, but Russ Olive grounded into a fielder's choice for the second out of the inning. Chris Betts walked to put runners at first and second with Tony Pena putting the Hot Rods in front with an RBI single to plate Olive. Betts moved into second and went to third when Jordan Qsar was walked to load the bases. Izzy Wilson dumped a single into left, scoring both Betts and Pena to make it a 3-0 game while Qsar took third on the play. With Osmy Gregorio at the plate, Wilson and Qsar executed a double steal with Qsar taking off for home on a delay. Both runners were safe with Qsar scoring to make it a 4-0 Bowling Green lead. The Lugnuts got a run back against McGee in the sixth. With two outs, Gabriel Moreno doubled to left and scored when Griffin Conine singled to right. Conine's RBI single cut the Hot Rods lead to three with a 4-1 score. The Lugnuts brought the tying run to the plate in the ninth but but Joel Peguero struck out back-to-back hitters to close out the win, Bowling Green's seventh straight.
Whalen's Hitting Streak... Seaver Whalen has been on a hot streak for Bowling Green lately, hitting safely in each of his last eight games. The versitile two-hitter had a walk-off hit and sacrifice fly during a four-game sweep against Great Lakes, but over this eight-game stretch is batting .375 with a homer and seven RBIs. Whalen's streak dates back to June 23, and is tied with Kaleo Johnson and Beau Brundage's eight-gamers as the team's 5th longest this season.
June Bloom... The Hot Rods started off the month of June slow, but finished with a record of 15-10. Bowling Green was led in average by Kaleo Johnson, who was batting .340 through 14 games prior to his promotion. Wander Franco and Michael Smith had the next highest averages at .298. Grant Witherspoon led the team in home runs with three, while no one else had more than one during the month. The Hot Rods finished with 13 total homers in June, the lowest total for any month out of the three played thus far. The pitching staff was great, posting a 2.67 ERA with 193 strikeouts over 212 innings of work while issuing just 48 walks.
