Lake County Captains News Release
(Eastlake, OH) - The Lake County Captains (7-5, 47-34) lost game one of a four-game, home-and-home series to the Fort Wayne TinCaps (4-8, 26-54) on Tuesday night at Classic Park. Lake County fell to Fort Wayne, 10-2.
Brock Hartson got the start for the Captains, making his return to professional baseball. The right-hander, who had retired ahead of the 2018 season, last pitched professionally for the High-A Lynchburg Hillcats in 2017 and donned a Captains uniform in 2016. He made one start in the Rookie-Level Arizona League before taking the ball on Tuesday.
The TinCaps jumped Hartson for three runs in the top of the first. Blake Hunt opened the scoring with an RBI single that plated Tucupita Marcano and Justin Lopez followed with a towering two-run homer to right that extended Fort Wayne's lead to 3-0.
Lake County came back with two runs in the bottom of the first and pulled within one run. After TinCaps starter Joey Cantillo retired the first two men, Jose Fermin singled and Ruben Cardenas doubled him home. Jesse Berardi then smoked a line drive that ricocheted off of Lopez's glove and bounced into right. Cardenas scored to trim Fort Wayne's lead to 3-2.
Fort Wayne rebounded with seven unanswered runs, beginning with three in the second inning. Luis Almanzar reached on an error by third baseman Makesiondon Kelkboom and Hartson walked Jawuan Harris. Xavier Edwards then slammed a two-run triple to right-centerfield and scored from third on a double steal with Marcano, who swiped second.
Edwards added a run in the third on an RBI single that plated Dwanya Williams-Sutton and a solo homer by Blake Hunt in the fourth gave the TinCaps an 8-2 lead. The TinCaps added two more in the seventh on an RBI single by Grant Little and a sacrifice fly by Almanzar to push the advantage to 10-2.
The game was paused for a brief, 19-minute rain delay in the bottom of the eighth and, after the tarp was put away, the Captains struck for their first run since the first inning. Cardenas hit a two-out double before the delay and scored after the delay when Daniel Schneemann singled through the right side.
Cantillo (6-2) earned the win after holding the Captains to two runs over six innings. The 19-year old lefty and two-time reigning Midwest League Pitcher of the Week struck out eight, walked one and scattered five hits.
Hartson (0-1) took the loss. The right-hander lasted 1.1 innings and allowed six runs, four earned, on five hits. Hartson walked three and did not record a strikeout.
The Captains take on Fort Wayne again on Wednesday night. First pitch at Classic Park is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
