TinCaps fall short, 8-7

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The TinCaps came back from a 5-0 hole to take a lead, but the Bowling Green Hot Rods retook the lead and held on for an 8-7 win, Monday at Parkview Field.

Bowling Green's Cody Rogers led off the game with a home run in his first Hot Rods at-bat. Later in the inning, Ryan Wiegand singled home a run. Later in the inning, Tomas Francisco was retired on the infield fly rule with the bases loaded. The ball was lost in the sun and Wiegand sprinted home to score and make it 3-0.

In the top of the second, Rogers rapped an RBI single. Two batters later, Brett Nommensen singled up the middle to push the lead to 5-0.

The Tincaps embarked on their comeback in the bottom of the second. With a runner at first, Edinson Rincon singled up the middle. Hagerty advanced all the way to third and the throw went past the third baseman and bounced out of play, allowing a run to score. Daniel Meeley's groundout cut the deficit to 5-2.

In the third, Hagerty singled home a run, Nate Freiman drew a bases-loaded walk and a wild pitch allowed the tying run to score.

The Hot Rods scored a run in the top of the fourth, but Freiman cracked a two-run homer just over the center-field wall to put the TinCaps ahead, 7-6.

Rogers homered off RHP Matt Jackson in the top of the sixth to tie the game. In the top of the ninth, Dustin Biell's RBI groundout put the Hot Rods back in front, 8-7.

The TinCaps threatened in the bottom of the ninth, putting two runners on with nobody out. After a strikeout, Danny Payne was caught stealing third base for the second out. Freiman walked, then LHP Jake Sullivan came on to strike out pinch-hitter Jon Alia to end the game.

Bowling Green LHP Aaron Dott (2-3) was the winning pitcher; Fort Wayne RHP Nick Schumacher (2-4) took the loss. Sullivan notched his first save of the year.

Fort Wayne dipped to 6-5 in the half, 42-39 for the season. Bowling Green upped his record to 6-5 in the second half, 37-43 for the year.

The TinCaps and Hot Rods (Class-A Tampa Bay Rays) finish the three-game series Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. at Parkview Field. Fort Wayne LHP Jose De Paula (4-2) gets the nod against Bowling Green LHP Kyle Lobstein (5-4).
