Dayton Dragons News Release

Grand Rapids, Mich. - Henry Rodriguez hit a three-run home run and Tim Crabbe tossed six strong innings to lead the Dayton Dragons to a 6-5 victory over the West Michigan Whitecaps on Monday night. The win was the second straight for the Dragons, who will try for a sweep of the series on Tuesday afternoon.

West Michigan jumped out to an early lead when the third batter of the first inning, Wade Gaynor, hit a home run to left field to make it 1-0. It was Gaynor's eighth of the year. They added a single run in the third to take a 2-0 lead.

But the Dragons got the offense going in the fourth. Andrew Means led off with a single to center, the first Dayton hit of the night. Didi Gregorius singled to right, and Rodriguez drilled a home run off the right field foul pole to give Dayton a 3-2 lead.

The Dragons added to their lead in the seventh inning when Mark Fleury's sacrifice fly brought in Cameron Satterwhite from third to make it 4-2. Later in the same inning, Means lined a single to center to bring in Tommy Nurre from second to give Dayton a 5-2 lead.

In the eighth, the Dragons scored again when Chris Richburg walked, stole second, and scored on Satterwhite's single to center to make it 6-2.

West Michigan pulled to within a run in the bottom of the eighth. Dragons reliever Ezequiel Infante issued back-to-back walks to start the inning and Gaynor drilled a triple to drive in two runs. Gaynor scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-5.

Kevin Arico came on to work the ninth inning for the Dragons and pitched a scoreless frame, allowing only a one-out single. It was the first professional save for Arico, who led the nation in saves this spring at the University of Virginia.

Crabbe (2-1) tossed six innings, allowing five hits and two runs with one walk and five strikeouts to earn the win. He retired the last 10 batters he faced.

The Dragons finished with nine hits. Means went 3 for 4 with a run scored, an RBI, a stolen base, and a walk. Gregorius added two hits. Rodriguez's homer extended his hitting streak to 10 straight games.

The Dragons (3-8) play at West Michigan (3-8) at 12:00 noon on Tuesday in the finale of the three-game series. J.C. Sulbaran (3-4, 4.71) will start for Dayton against West Michigan's Trevor Feeney (7-7, 3.29). The next home game is Saturday, July 10 against Great Lakes.
