Lansing Lugnuts News Release

LANSING, Mich. - Behind the strong pitching of Clayton Cook and a go-ahead RBI single from Tim Palincsar, the Lake County Captains (6-5; 50-30) stymied the Lansing Lugnuts (7-4; 43-37), 3-1, on Monday night on Jackson Field.

Trailing 1-0 in the 6th inning, the Captains tied the score against Dave Sever (2-5) on a Kyle Smith RBI double. Two batters later, Palincsar greeted incoming reliever Matt Wright with a ground ball into right field to plate Smith.

That was enough for Cook (4-4), who allowed a Ryan Goins double and a Yan Gomes RBI single in the first inning, then combined with Tyler Sturdevant to hold the Lugnuts to only two hits for the remainder of the game.

Sturdevant pitched the final three innings, striking out six, for his second save.

Lugnuts DH Kevin Nolan went 0-for-4, ending his team-high hitting streak at 18 games, though Goins went 2-for-3 with a walk to extend his on-base streak to 20 games.

Lugnuts starter Sever gave up two runs on six hits in 5 1/3 innings, striking out five. After Wright worked 1 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, Steve Turnbull recorded the final two frames in scoreless fashion.

The Lugnuts send right-hander Ryan Tepera (7-3, 3.14) to the mound at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday for the rubber match of the series, opposing Captains left-hander Matt Packer (6-4, 1.68). The affair is a Dollar Dog Tuesday at Cooley Law School Stadium, featuring $1 hot dogs all game long.
