Tempers Flare as Hawks Swept in Doubleheader
July 5, 2010 - Midwest League (MWL1)
South Bend Silver Hawks News Release
Midland, MI - Three South Bend Silver Hawks were ejected in game two of the doubleheader as the frustration of continuing to lose to the Great Lakes Loons bubbled over Monday night. The Loons homered four times on the night in winning game one 6-3 and then taking the nightcap 6-2 as they improved to 16-1 against the Hawks in 2010.
Down 6-1 in the bottom of the fifth of game two, reliever Bradin Hagens (ND) fielded a slow roller by Jaime Ortiz. Standing on the first base line, Hagens was run over by Ortiz but held on for the out. Losing his cool, Hagens stood up and shoved Ortiz, resulting in the benches emptying. Cooler heads prevailed and no punches were thrown. However, after Hagens was the only player ejected, manager Mark Haley and pitching coach Wellington Cepeda argued to the point where they were both ejected as well.
In game one, the Silver Hawks took a 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning on an RBI double by Matt Davidson and RBI singles from Ramon Castillo and Alberto Diaz. However, those would be the only runs South Bend manager against Matt Magill (WP, 4-1) and Steve Smith (SV, 5).
South Bend starter Andrew Wolcott (LP, 0-1) went all six innings in his Silver Hawks debut, but took the loss by allowing a three run homer to Brian Cavazos-Galvez in the fourth inning and another three run shot to Blake Smith in the fifth.
Game two was much of the same, with the Silver Hawks taking an early 1-0 lead in the first, but home runs by Smith and Cavazos-Galvez against Randy Rodriguez (LP, 0-3) lifted the Loons to the 6-2 victory.
Rubby De La Rosa (WP, 2-1) allowed one run in 6.0 innings for the win in game two.
Castillo had hits in both games, extending his team-high hitting streak to 13 games - every game he's played in for South Bend. Castillo also had RBIs in both games of the double dip.
Keon Broxton picked up his league leading 11th triple in the second game, and is now just one triple shy of tying 2001 Silver Hawk Victor Hall for the franchise record.
The two teams wrap up the series on Tuesday evening at 7:05 PM at Dow Diamond. RHP Brad Wilson (0-0, 0.00 ERA) will make his 2010 Silver Hawks debut against RHP Elisaul Pimentel (8-3, 2.47 ERA). awHHH hhhhzHxHHhfkjgPregame coverage begins at 6:45 PM Eastern Time on 1620 ESPN Radio and online at www.silverhawks.com.
