The Mayhem did not start the second half of their season the way they had hoped, falling by a 9-2 margin in Fayetteville on Friday night.
Macon drew a penalty just 24 seconds into the game, as Fayetteville defenseman Oscar Arfelt was found guilty of hooking. However, the Mayhem failed to capitalize on the ensuing power play, and the Marksmen seized the first goal of the game. Max Cook received a pass near the Macon blue line, and the Fayetteville Captain split through the Mayhem defense on a breakaway. He beat Hayden Stewart with a wrist shot, giving the hosts a 1-0 lead.
Fayetteville doubled its lead when Alec Marsh drove down the left side upon entering Macon ice. From the bottom of the left circle, he snapped a shot which beat Stewart over the shoulder and just inside the crossbar, giving the Marksmen a 2-0 lead. Gustafsson extended Fayetteville's lead further with a backhand shot from the right wing. The Mayhem trailed by a 3-0 margin entering the first intermission.
A wild second period was in store for both teams, causing the Mayhem to fall behind by an enormous margin. Cook scored his second goal of the game after the Marksmen out-raced an icing penalty in the Macon zone, causing the Mayhem to fall behind by a 4-0 score. Dylan Denomme finally put the Mayhem on the board shortly afterward, racing down the slot with his team down a man and netting a goal to snap the shutout bid of Blake Wojtala. It would be Denomme's second shorthanded goal in the last three games.
Brian Bowen buried a pair of goals in the middle stanza, and Matt Robertson struck, as well. Mayhem winger Stepan Timofeev found the net and his second point of the game, managing to score while falling above the Fayetteville crease. However, the Russian's goal barely put a dent in Macon's deficit, as the visitors entered the third period trailing by a dismal 7-2 score.
The Mayhem made a goaltending change to start period three, putting Michael Cosentino in net to relieve Stewart. The Marksmen continued pouring it on in the closing frame, as Brett Johnson received a give-and-go pass from Brett Johnson before firing a one-timer into the net to make the score 8-2. Robertson notched another following a Fayetteville power play, which was the last of the Marksmen's goal-scoring spree.
The Mayhem will head to Roanoke to kick off a two-game stint with the Rail Yard Dawgs tomorrow night. Puck drops at 7:05 pm ET.
