Portland Timbers News Release
PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers will face Seattle Sounders FC in the first leg of the two-game, aggregate-goal Western Conference Semifinals in the Audi 2018 MLS Cup Playoffs at Providence Park on Sunday, it was announced this evening. Beginning at 2:30 p.m. (Pacific), the match will be televised nationally on ESPN.
Individual tickets for Portland's home playoff match against Sounders FC on Sunday are currently available for purchase online here and by phone at (888) 736-6849.
Following Sunday's match, Portland will travel for a road match against Seattle in the second leg of the Western Conference Semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 8, at CenturyLink Field; kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. (Pacific).
The Timbers advanced to the Western Conference Semifinals with a 2-1 win in the Knockout Round over FC Dallas and play host to the first leg of the conference semifinals as the lower-seeded club. Portland has now appeared in the conference semifinals four times (2013, 2015, 2017, 2018) in its last six seasons. The Timbers are one of just four teams (Columbus Crew SC, New York Red Bulls, Seattle Sounders FC) to appear in as many as four conference semifinals over the last six seasons.
Sunday's match will mark the 103rd meeting all-time between Portland and Seattle, and will be the fifth time the two meet in the postseason across all eras, dating back to 1975. In the MLS era, the two teams previously met in the 2013 Western Conference Semifinals, with Portland winning both matches in the two-leg series (5-3). The Timbers earned their first MLS playoff win in their first-ever MLS playoff game, defeating Seattle 2-1 in the first leg on Nov. 2, 2013.
In MLS play, including the playoffs, the Timbers have posted a mark of 7-3-3 all-time against Sounders FC at Providence Park. In addition, Portland won two of the three meetings between the two sides during the regular season in 2018, earning a 1-0 win at Providence Park on May 13 and then recording a 3-2 victory at CenturyLink Field on June 30.
