
Timbers, New England Revolution Play to 2-2 Draw in 2022 MLS Home Opener at Providence Park

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers tallied a late-second half goal to secure a 2-2 draw against the New England Revolution in their MLS home opener at Providence Park on Saturday night. Yimmi Chara notched the game-tying goal - his first of the 2022 season - to help Portland earn a point, while Dairon Asprilla recorded his first goal of the campaign.
Familiar Faces
Thirteen returning players appeared for Portland tonight. Asprilla and Y. Chara each scored their first goals of the season. Asprilla registered his 18th career goal with Portland, and Y. Chara his eleventh. Santiago Moreno and Y. Chara also tallied their first assists of the 2022 campaign. Moreno's was his fifth for the Timbers, and Y. Chara's 16th with Portland. Tonight is the third time Y. Chara has recorded both a goal and an assist in a single game for the Timbers.
Providence Park Home Openers
Dating back to their inaugural MLS campaign in 2011, the Timbers have posted a record of 6-2-4 in home openers. Tonight's opener marked the second time Asprilla has scored in the club's home opener. He also scored in the 2021 home opener against Houston Dynamo FC.
Against New England
Tonight's match was the Timbers first against the Revolution since September 25, 2019, earning a draw against the reigning MLS Shield winners. In 11 regular season meetings against the Revolution, the Timbers lead the series 2-1-8 and are unbeaten at home with a 2-0-4 record. Notably, Portland has outscored the Revolution 10-5 when playing at Providence Park. Portland has gone undefeated against New England in their last eight match ups, dating back to May 2, 2013.

NE - Brandon Bye (Carles Gil), 41st minute: Carles Gil curled a corner kick to the far side of the six-yard box and Brandon Bye sent a powerful header just under the crossbar.
POR - Dairon Asprilla (Santiago Moreno, Y. Chara), 60th minute: Y. Chara played the ball into Moreno on top of the 18-yard box. After working through several defenders, Moreno slipped it through the Revolution defense towards the six-yard box for Asprilla, who took a touch and placed in the corner netting.
NE - Sebastian Lletget (DeJuan Jones, Tommy McNamara), 63rd minute: Off a throw-in, Tommy McNamara played the ball down the left wing to DeJuan Jones, who slotted the ball to Sebastian Lletget at the top of the six-yard box and he fired the ball inside the right post.
POR - Y. Chara, 78th minute: Josecarlos Van Rankin dribbled to right corner of the box and delivered a cross to the center of the box. A New England player attempted to clear the ball and it was re-directed to Yimmi Chara, who spun and connected with a bicycle kick, sending the ball into the right corner of the net.
Notes
The Timbers kicked off their 12th season in MLS today.
In 12 home openers, Portland has a record of 6-2-4.
Portland is 2-1-8 against New England in regular season play and undefeated when playing at Providence Park with a record of 2-0-4.
The Timbers are unbeaten against the Revolution in their last eight match ups, dating back to May 2, 2013.
Asprilla scored his first goal of the 2022 campaign and 18th of his career with Portland.
Asprilla's goal was his second straight in a Providence Park home opener (April 24, 2021 vs. Houston Dynamo FC).
Moreno tallied his first assist of the season and fifth overall for the Timbers.
Y. Chara recorded his first goal of the year and 11th since joining Portland.
Y. Chara also registered his first assist of the campaign and 16th in his career for the Timbers.
Tonight's match was the third time Y. Chara has tallied a goal and assist in a single game for Portland.
Y. Chara led the team with four chances created.
Aljaz Ivacic registered fives saves.
All 13 players who appeared for the Timbers tonight are returners from the 2021 season.
Portland debuted its Heritage Rose secondary jersey in tonight's match.
