Vancouver Whitecaps FC News Release
COLUMBUS, OH - Vancouver Whitecaps FC kicked off their 2022 MLS season at Lower.com Field on a cold day against Columbus Crew. The Crew scored a pair of goals in each half to earn a 4-0 home win.
Columbus opened the scoring in the eighth minute when a shot at the top of the box from forward Miguel Berry was deflected twice and into the corner of the net.
The Crew then doubled the lead in the 25th minute as Derrick Etienne broke into the box and finished his chance to make it 2-0.
The Blue & White were dealt a blow in the 53rd minute when Jake Nerwinski was shown a second yellow card to reduce the 'Caps to 10 men. Columbus would go on to score two late goals in the second half by Luis Díaz and Lucas Zelarayán.
The 'Caps now prepare for their home opener next Saturday, March 5 against defending MLS Cup champions New York City FC. Kickoff will be at 3 p.m. PT, with tickets available at whitecapsfc.com/tickets.
INJURY UPDATE: Last year's leading scoring Brian White suffered a right foot contusion in training earlier in the week and is expected to be available for next weekend's home opener, while Caio Alexandre continues to work on his fitness after missing half of last year after suffering a left foot fifth metatarsal fracture last August.
