The New York Red Bulls (1-0-0, 3 pts.) defeated San Jose Earthquakes (0-1-0, 0 pts.), 3-1, in their 2022 MLS season opener on Saturday afternoon at PayPal Park.
New York opened the scoring in the first minute of first half stoppage time, when Dru Yearwood won possession of the ball in San Jose's half, where Omir Fernandez found the ball and drove towards San Jose's eighteen-yard box. He laid the ball off to Lewis Morgan, who played a cross to the near post and Patryk Klimala placed it in the back of the net.
San Jose equalized the match in the 69th minute when Cristian Espinoza whipped in a free kick to the near post and Eduardo Lopez headed it in the back of the net.
The Red Bulls found the lead again in the 72nd minute, when Frankie Amaya took the ball off of San Jose midfielder Jamiro Monteiro and played a ball over the top to Fernandez, who hit a left-footed shoot between the legs of the San Jose goalkeeper.
New York scored their third goal of the match in the 92nd minute, when Caden Clark gathered the ball and drove at San Jose defenders. He laid the ball off to Tom Barlow, who slipped it past the San Jose goalkeeper.
Klimala scored his first goal of the 2022 season and his ninth with the Red Bulls. He becomes the 27th different player to score the first goal of the season for New York in 27 seasons.
Making his debut for the club, Morgan registered his first assist for the club and of the season. He has tallied 13 assists in his MLS career.
Fernandez tallied the fourth assist of his career and his first since September 23, 2020, against Inter Miami CF.
The Bronx, NY native scored his eighth career goal for the Red Bulls and his second-career game-winning goal.
Amaya tallied his first two assists of the season and sets a new career-high in assists for a season. His game-winning assist in tonight's match was the first of his career.
Barlow scored his first goal of the season and his eight career MLS goal. His 92nd minute goal is tied with Adolfo Valencia (2001) and Carlos Rivas (2018) for the latest goal scored in a season opener in franchise history.
Clark tallied seventh career MLS assist and his first since November 7, 2021, against Nashville SC.
The Red Bulls move to 11-10-6 in their season openers all-time, which includes being unbeaten in their last four season openers on the road.
With his MLS debut, forward Serge Ngoma ties Eddie Gaven for the franchise record for the youngest player to play in a match at 16 years, 232 days old.
New York opened their season with a road victory for the first time since 2017 in a 2-1 win against Atlanta United FC.
The Red Bulls have won four-straight matches against the Earthquakes outscoring them 15 to 4 in those matches.
Morgan and defender Dylan Nealis both made their club debuts for New York.
Midfielder Daniel Edelman made his MLS debut coming on in the 75th minute. He becomes the 13th player to sign with New York Red Bulls II, sign with the first team, and then play in an MLS regular season match.
The Nealis brothers became the 19th pair of brothers in MLS history to play on the same team.
New York Captain Aaron Long made his return to the starting lineup for the first time since May 15, 2021, against the Philadelphia Union.
Since 2014, New York has earned 419 points, which is second for the most points in MLS during that timespan.
