Club de Foot Montreal News Release
MONTREAL - A day before the season opener, CF Montréal announced Saturday that Homegrown Player Mathieu Choinière signed a two-year contract extension for the 2023 and 2024 seasons with an option year in 2025.
"We are happy that Mathieu continues with us," said CF Montréal Sporting Director Olivier Renard. He had some difficult moments due to an injury which kept him off the pitch for several months, but he came back strong, proving his qualities in a different position. We hope that he will keep on progressing. This contract extension is aligned with the Club's philosophy which is to have confidence in young players and if they are from the province of Quebec like Mathieu, it's even better."
Choinière, who turned 23 on February 7, has been with the Club for over a decade, having joined the Academy in 2011. He was the first player to feature for the U13, U14, U16, U18 and U19 squads prior to joining the first team in MLS on July 17, 2018.
2021 was a standout year for Choinière, allowing him to consolidate his place within the first team's ranks. He played 26 matches, including 24 starts, scoring twice in his 1,992 minutes on the pitch. In five seasons in MLS, he has earned 30 starts in 48 games played and logged a grand total of 2,755 minutes of game time. He notably helped the Club secure its Canadian Championship titles in 2019 and 2021.
At the international level, he attended his first camp with the Canadian men's senior national team in September 2018. Last June, he was included in John Herdman's provisional roster ahead of the 2021 Gold Cup. He made his start with the Canadian program in 2013 at the age of 14.
