San Jose Earthquakes News Release
SAN JOSE, Calif. - The San Jose Earthquakes will host the New York Red Bulls in the club's 2022 season opener today at 3:00 p.m. PT at PayPal Park , presented by Intermedia. The match will be broadcast live on NBC Sports California, KNBR 680 (English) and 1370 KZSF (Spanish).
Saturday's match is the first between the Quakes and Red Bulls since March 16, 2019, and the first at PayPal Park since Oct. 6, 2018. San Jose holds an 17-14-9 all-time record against New York, including a 13-3-3 record at home.
San Jose is led by its trio of Designated Players: Mexican midfielder Chofis, Argentine winger Cristian Espinoza, and newly acquired midfielder Jamiro Monteiro. Chofis was one of three finalists for the 2021 MLS Newcomer of the Year award after scoring a team-high 12 goals, while Espinoza and Monteiro are two of just four players in MLS with at least six assists in each of the past three seasons.
Eighteen-year-old Cade Cowell will also look to build on his breakout season in 2021, in which he tallied five goals and six assists, was named to the MLS All-Star Team, and earned his first cap for the U.S. Men's National Team.
The match will also mark the beginning of head coach Matias Almeyda's fourth season at the helm. Almeyda has coached 91 regular season matches to date, third most in club history behind Frank Yallop (257) and Dominic Kinnear (147).
San Jose has won five of its seven home openers since PayPal Park's inaugural season in 2015.
