FOXBORO, Mass. - Playing their third game in a seven-day span, the Portland Timbers battled back to earn a point on the road with a 1-1 draw against the New England Revolution in front of 16,040 fans at Gillette Stadium on Saturday night. Trailing by a goal in the second half, Lawrence Olum registered his first goal of the season in the 70th minute to help Portland secure the point on the road.
Timbers firsts
Leveling the match in the 70th minute, Olum tallied his first goal of the 2018 season. He is the 12th different player to score a goal for the Timbers this season. Julio Cascante and David Guzmán both recorded their first assists of the campaign in the match, becoming the 11th and 12th different players to register an assist for the Timbers in 2018. In addition, goalkeeper Steve Clark made his Timbers debut, entering the match as a substitute in the 56th minute.
Against New England
With the draw, Portland has earned at least one point in four of its five matches on the road all-time against New England, including one point in three consecutive trips to Gillette Stadium. The Timbers are now 2-1-6 all-time against the Revolution.
Key plays
Jeff Attinella was called into action less than 30 seconds into the game. Against the run of play, New England's Teal Bunbury got behind Portland's back line and received a back-heel pass from Kelyn Rowe just inside the box, but Attinella came off his line quickly to intervene on Bunbury's attempt at point-blank range.
The Timbers generated a chance off a set piece in the 30th minute. Guzmán earned a free kick just outside the box and delivered a dipping strike that skipped just wide of the left post.
Starting the second half on the front foot, Portland controlled a spell of possession, combining outside the Revolution's box. Sebastián Blanco slipped a pass to Dairon Asprilla near the edge of the box. Asprilla turned and delivered a shot from distance that went just wide of the left post in the 47th minute.
New England took a 1-0 lead in the 58th minute. Bunbury played a cross in from the right end line and Rowe unleashed a shot from near the penalty spot that forced a save by Clark, but Scott Caldwell converted on a loose ball at the goal line for the Revolution.
Portland leveled the match in the 70th minute as Olum scored his first goal of the season. Guzmán sent a driven ball into the box on the corner kick. Several players challenged for the ball and New England goalkeeper Matt Turner came off his line, but he was unable to collect the ball and it landed at the back post for Olum, who directed the ball over the goal line.
The Timbers nearly tallied the game-winner in second-half stoppage time. Blanco dribbled from midfield down the right side all the way to the end line and slotted a pass across the box for Lucas Melano, who nearly got a touch at the goal line.

Lawrence Olum scored his first goal of the season and the seventh of his MLS career in the match. It marked his second career MLS goal for Portland.
