Atlanta United FC News Release
ATLANTA - Atlanta United returns to action on Sunday, September 2 when it travels to face D.C. United at Audi Field. Atlanta enters the weekend in second place in the Supporters' Shield Standings (16-4-6, 54 points) while D.C. United sits in eighth place in the Eastern Conference (7-11-6, 27 points). The match is scheduled to kick-off at 7:30 p.m. EST and will be nationally televised on FS1.
Atlanta is coming off a 2-1 win against Orlando City SC on August 24 in Orlando. Leandro González Pirez scored his first goal of the season to give Atlanta the lead before Scott Sutter tied the match before halftime. Josef Martinez scored his league-leading ninth game-winning goal of the season and made history in the 74th minute with a clever finish over goalkeeper Joe Bendik to break the MLS single-season goals record with 28 goals with eight games still remaining on Atlanta's schedule. With a goal on Sunday, Martinez will break the league record for consecutive games with a goal, a mark he currently shares with Diego Valeri at nine games.
D.C. United lost 2-0 to Philadelphia Union on Wednesday at Audi Field behind goals from C.J. Sapong and Fafa Picault. D.C. United has lost its last two games but is looking to take advantage of a home-heavy schedule that will see the club play eight of its final 10 matches at Audi Field.
