Portland Timbers News Release

PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers today selected 10 players in Major League Soccer's 2010 Expansion Draft, then traded three of them and acquired one more as the club continues to build its roster for its debut MLS season in 2011. The Timbers had the first overall pick in the Expansion Draft and in total selected five defenders, four midfielders and a forward among their selections.

The Timbers, along with fellow MLS expansion side Vancouver Whitecaps FC, exchanged selections in the 10-round draft, choosing from a pool of unprotected players submitted by each of the other 16 teams in the league; in total 20 players were selected in the Expansion Draft.

Players selected by the Timbers in the Expansion Draft (in order of selection): midfielder Dax McCarty (FC Dallas), defender Eric Brunner (Columbus Crew), midfielder Adam Moffat (Columbus Crew), defender Anthony Wallace (Colorado Rapids), defender David Horst (Real Salt Lake), forward Robbie Findley (Real Salt Lake), midfielder Peter Lowry (Chicago Fire), defender Jonathan Bornstein (Chivas USA), defender Jordan Graye (D.C. United) and midfielder Arturo Alvarez (San Jose Earthquakes).

Following the draft, Portland dealt McCarty and allocation money to D.C. United in exchange for defender/midfielder Rodney Wallace and a fourth-round pick in the 2011 MLS SuperDraft.

Later in the day, the Timbers completed two more deals, trading Anthony Wallace back to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for allocation money, and sending Alvarez to Real Salt Lake for a second-round pick (No. 22 overall) in January's MLS SuperDraft.

In all, the club added eight players on the day.

From the Expansion Priority Draft held in August, Portland opted to select the first pick in the 2010 MLS Expansion Draft among several player-acquisition mechanisms to assemble its 2011 roster.

Brunner, 24, joins the Timbers after two seasons with the Columbus Crew. Originally drafted by New York in the second round of the 2008 MLS SuperDraft, the Dublin, Ohio, native departed to join Miami FC of the USL First Division. After one season in Miami, Brunner signed with Columbus after having his rights acquired from the Red Bulls on March 18, 2009. The defender appeared in 39 games (36 starts) and totaled two goals and an assist in two seasons with the Crew.

Moffat, 24, joins the Timbers after four seasons with the Crew. The midfielder began his career in the Scottish second and third divisions before heading stateside to join Cleveland City Stars of the USL Second Division in 2007. Signed by the Crew through discovery on Sept. 19, 2007, Moffat scored five goals and added one assist in 44 career games (36 starts) with Columbus.

Horst, 25, spent the past three seasons with Real Salt Lake, appearing in three MLS matches. In 2010, he was loaned to the Puerto Rico Islanders of the USSF Division-2 Pro League, where he played in 29 matches and helped the club to its first league championship. The Pine Grove, Pa., native also played a key role in the Islanders' 2010-2011 CONCACAF Champions League run, making eight starts and scoring two goals, including the game-winner in stoppage time of a 3-2 win over Mexico's Toluca. Horst was a first-round selection (14th overall) of Real Salt Lake in the 2008 MLS SuperDraft.

Findley, 25, spent the last three-and-a-half seasons with Real Salt Lake. The athletic forward began his career as a first-round pick (6th overall) of the LA Galaxy in 2007 and was traded to Real Salt Lake halfway through his rookie year, a campaign that saw him pace MLS rookies and rank ninth league-wide with eight goals. After being drafted out of UCLA in the fourth round (37th overall) by Chivas USA in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft, the Torrance, Calif., native set career highs with 32 games, six goals, four assists and 2,878 minutes, leading all MLS rookies in goals and all non-goalkeepers in minutes. Bornstein has represented the United States on a number of occasions, most notably in matches against Algeria and Ghana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup.

Graye, 23, joins the Timbers after one professional season with D.C. United. The Washington, D.C., native came up through United's Youth Academy, playing at the U-14, U-15, U-16 and U-20 levels before being selected by D.C. United in the fourth round (55th overall) of the 2010 MLS SuperDraft. As a rookie, the athletic defender started 20 games for United in 2010, ranking fourth on the team with 1,668 minutes played.
