PORTLAND, Ore. - The Portland Timbers have acquired Honduran midfielder Bryan Acosta from the Colorado Rapids in exchange for $150,000 in 2023 General Allocation Money (GAM) and $175,000 in conditional 2024 GAM if certain performance metrics and roster-based criteria are met, it was announced today. Acosta will be under contract with the club through 2023 with a club option in 2024 and will be eligible for matchday roster selection with the Timbers for their next league match.
"We are pleased to welcome Bryan to the Portland Timbers " said Ned Grabavoy, Timbers General Manager. "Bryan brings a wealth of experience to our club, and he provides us another solid option in a much-needed position. He will play an important role with us as we strengthen the group in our pursuit to pick up necessary results and finish the season strong."
Acosta, 29, has spent the last five seasons playing in MLS (FC Dallas, Colorado Rapids). He recorded two goals and five assists in 60 regular season appearances (49 starts) through three seasons with FC Dallas (2019-2021), after signing as a Designated Player with the club in 2019. The midfielder joined Colorado in 2022 and has since tallied four assists in 40 regular season appearances (35 starts) for the Rapids.
Internationally, Acosta has made 62 appearances for the Honduras Men's National Team. Most recently, he made all three appearances in the group stage of the 2023 CONCACAF Gold Cup against Mexico (June 25), Qatar (June 29) and Haiti (July 2). Acosta has featured in 13 FIFA World Cup qualifying matches, 15 CONCACAF Gold Cup and Nations League matches, and Copa Centroamericana. He received his first senior call up on February 26, 2014, and went on to make his debut on March 6, 2014. Additionally, Acosta played for Honduras's U-20 and U-23 teams, featuring in the 2016 U-23 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, captaining the team through all six matches played, including the bronze medal match against Nigeria.
"I'm excited to welcome Bryan into our team. His experience and competitiveness will make us become a better team, as well as provide us with more depth in our midfield," said Timbers head coach Giovanni Savarese.
The La Ceiba, Honduras native began his professional career in 2013 with Honduras' top-tier side Real C.D. España, making his debut at the age 18 on September 23, 2013, against C.D.S. Vida. Acosta made 129 appearances over four seasons (2013-2017) with Real España, tallying 19 goals. Notably, he was a part of the winning 2013 Apertura squad that qualified for the CONCACAF Champions League (2014-15), making four appearances in four matches. The midfielder continued his career in Spain's second-tier division with Club Deportivo Tenerife, where he scored five goals and tallied six assists in 47 appearances. Notably, Acosta featured in Copa del Rey matches with Tenerife in two seasons (2017-18, 2018-19), scoring one goal in four matches overall.
